But i am wondering, with the weather here, when can I move them out to the coop without a heat lamp?

Trixie, the picture is adorable. Isnt it a great feeling when they come running to you. As for puttng them out without the heat lamp. Keep in mind Chickens, need 95* the first week and then you decrease it by 5* per week. SO with our nights still in the 50's* it really depends on the age. We still have th eheat lamp on our 4 week olds in the house. If they were outside I wouldnt have the lamp on unless it wasnt warm. So If we put them in the chicken house I would have the heat lamp on until they were old enough for the 50* weather. SO Around 8 weeks old. before I took the lamp away as long as it was decent.

Now keep in mind, we are new to this still, but this is what we read when researching.

Thanks for popping in. Same to you Sam!

I often have pips that sit 12 hours before they start to zip...sometimes I hear chirping or see rocking and other times not. Hatching the first time is very stressfull but a pip is a victory in itself!! What is pipped?

ETA: I ask what is pipped so I can tease you with a fuzzy butt pic!! hehe

went into lockdown last nite, and already had a pip this morning. but nothing has happened since. think its ok? should i hear chirping?

Hey all! No time to catch up but I have a question. Has anyone lost any hens this week? I've had one yesterday and one today just dead in the coop. No signs of mites or anything like that. Could it be the sudden heat? I'm baffled!

We lost a hen last week, I think it was Thursday. We looked to see what was wrong and it was egg Peritonitis :(

Both of my hens were just in the coop dead. I'm really confused. My husband seems to remember that last year when it suddenly got hot, we lost some chickens. I'm really worried about this weather. I hope it doesn't stay this hot and worse from now until October!

So sorry Susanne, my birds seem to be enjoying the warmer temps as much as I am. Egg production is up and the babies (ok, juveniles - ya'll know I keep my babies inside for a long time) are out pecking around in the grass and enjoying the sunshine.
