Hey all! No time to catch up but I have a question. Has anyone lost any hens this week? I've had one yesterday and one today just dead in the coop. No signs of mites or anything like that. Could it be the sudden heat? I'm baffled!
It's been really busy around the farm, longer days and warm temps mean it's time to get some work done! I wanted to share some good news, this week I got my first turkey eggs (3 so far) and my first guinea eggs. I think spring has sprung. Also wanted to share an experiment that I've been doing with shipped eggs. I received 2 boxes of eggs at the same time and I candled them to check the air sacs. The one box (my Dorking eggs) were really in bad shape with the majority of the eggs having floating air sacs. I also had 15 BLRW eggs that didn't look too bad, only a few showing damaged air sacs. So I put the worst eggs, the Dorkings, on my hatcher tray for the first week and did not turn them at all. The BLRW eggs went into the egg turners. At 7 days I candled them and 10 of the 15 Dorking eggs had veins! These were the worst eggs and 2/3 of them are growing. I checked my BLRW eggs and they didn't look so good, only 5 eggs out of 15 had veins. From now on, any shipped eggs that I receive will go without any turning for the first week. I now have the Dorking eggs in the turner and they seem to be growing well. I'll let you know if I have a good hatch from them. Just wanted to share that bit of information. Here's a pic of my turkey egg - isn't it beautiful!

So sorry susanne!Samantha, which TSC?
We lost our second babydoll lamb today. This one was born dead but at least we didn't have to spend an hour getting it out. Not sure what's going on with these rascals. Think I'll stick to chickens!
I do this most times. Of course I do good to turn more than twice a day.
BUT those with really really bad air sacs...if anything does start to develop - I do not turn those ever. Most times they will need help out because they can't seem to turn to zip fully.
Glad to know you all made it through the class and are now NPIP!
Robert and Kris, you can do my kids while you have them. My Cochins get checked all the time when I sell them for show but so far the d'Uccles haven't been checked except for "Rumpy", the very rare d'Everburg that was shipped out the other week. Her and the Porcelain d'Uccle roo tested clean.
Did you all learn a lot? What were some interesting facts that you can share with us?
