Someone please tell me there is a local chapter of Birds Anonymous.. My hubby so need to go.. Our farm is growing like wildfire. I thought we had agreed that we wouldn't buy anymore birds for awhile, but today we get 2 ducks.. well in his defense the girls were wanting ducks. So now we have 2 white pecking ducks added to our beautiful farm. If we keep this up we're gonna run out of room :( pouts.. that would be a sad day for sure.. just sayin'

No chick anonymous...just enablers here!!! LOLOL

Well we had a rather startling surprise awaiting us at the coop yesterday. DH walked out to check on the chickens and found a 5 foot snake skin sitting beside our coop. This really concerns me for 2 reasons: 1 being that there is at least a 5 foot snake running around my yard (Ick.. I really dislike snakes) and 2: I'm worried about my chickens safety. The hens are not laying as of yet (too young) but I would hate to think that snake would be able to get ahold of one of my chickens. Has anybody else had this problem? What can I do to keep that sneaky snake out of my coop and away from my chickens? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

You should talk to Dixiebeast (Samantha)! She bare-handed caught a 5ft+ one out of her coop and drove it down the road to re-home it!!! OMG!!! That slitherer would be SOOO dead here!!!

You can fit alot on an acre!! I am lucky to have right at 9 acres!! I fell in love with call ducks at the Newnan show and have eggs on order for Buffs!! They are teeny lil duckies!! We are even planning on putting in a huge pond for them in a big enclosed outdoor duck garden!!

Oh wow that sounds really nice. I'm sure they will love that. I wish we had more land here, but then again the more land we have the more DH wants to add on chickens, ducks, or animals in general. DH grew up on a farm and loves being around animals. I on the other hand only had dogs and cats growing up, but I am growing to love farming so much. The best part is watching my children learn about how to properly care for the animals. My oldest daughter has asked to join the local 4-H club since we started raising chickens. I think it will be really good for her and show her some responsibility. She was diagnosed with ADHD when she was about 6 years old. We've been fighting with her ever since for her inattention and hyperactivity. However, when she's in the coop with the chickens (especially now since she has her own bird, precious Stuart Little) she's very calm and attentive. Every day she asks me can she go out and make sure the chickens have food and water and she always wants to sit with the birds. It's really amazing how much she's learning and grown over the past couple of months. Anyways, I'm rambling again.. Sorry for the book.. LOL

Dee, I beleive if you look back on these pages you will find a post from Westknollamy, she said put sulfer around the coop. But be sure I am right and look back, you may be able to do a search on amy and find it faster

I put moth balls around mine. Not smelling the best but no snakes so far. However went out to barn last night and saw an egg on the ground. Bent down to get and saw 2 shiny eyes looking at me and a long black body. Now that being said He was beside the egg, did not get, his body was halfway past it but he had to die. Just couldn't help it.

My motto here too! He has to die!!!

Oh dear, I would have died right then and there.. I really do not like snakes. Ick.. I use moth balls under my house to keep them out, but I was afraid to put them near the chickens before I asked. I didn't want to put something out that would hurt my feathered friends :) Thanks for all the input. I found the post from Westknollamy. I don't know what I'd do without all of my friends here at BYC.. You are all lifesavers..I've learned so much, but still have a lot to learn..
