The laying Age depends on the diet they have been fed. IF they had plenty of Starter/Grower and other higher protiens. look for eggs in about 5 months ( that's when my RIR's start ) I've noticed with folks on a mainstay of scratch growing up it will be about 7. other things added with the scratch like laying pellets it'll be about 6.
If your new to chickens remember this. the chickens will only be as good as they are fed. Hatch through Juvie. mine have never seen an empty starter / grower feeder. Juvie they get put in with the laying hens and receive their diet ( 2 scoops of scratch 1 scoop of laying pellets 1/2 to 1 scoop of starter grower ) a cup or two of dry cat food a month just to keep them spoiled and shining.
I'm not bragging but I do have some pretty birds.

New to the hole chicken thing here. Had a long weekend off from work and was able to finish up the coop and run. I guess the next thing will be waiting for some eggs. I have 6 RIRs and 2 Speckled Sussex. What am I looking at for laying age. I've read anywhere from 5-7 months old. Does that sound about right?

Well I moved 43 RIR eggs out of my big incubator into the " fishabator " I call it ( home made incubator made from a styrofoam fish shipping crate )I have the hatching tray in the bottom of the big incubator divided into 6 sections for the game chickens I have been hatching for a friend every week, so I elected to just move the eggs to a different incubator. It's been about a week without the sounds of chirping in my dinning room corner and I think I am actually going into DT's with the silence of being in the house alone without the noise. I think I'll stick about 30 more in the big incubator to go the the 28 guineas and 40 more game already in there. There isn't a psycologist in here to tell me why I go into DT's when I don't have chicks in the house. this is the first weekend I've had without chicks in the house since the first week of feb.
Let's see what happens Wednesday. ( 19 days in the turner )

Sad news... I went to go check on our little chickie Pip Squeak and to my horror he wasn't breathing. I watched really closely and no movement.. So I picked him up and still nothing :( Our first baby chick that we hatched has passed away :( I'm very sad..

I do not do silkies but I will be glad to run them through the incubator. I keep mine on 24/7 and I'm only 20 miles away south of you down 176 turn right on 215 and a mile or so down across from midway bbq. just come get your chicks when they hatch . my big incubator turns 288 eggs at a time. then the hovabator and the lg both run 41 at a time. and a couple " hatching "incubators when needed... I believe I can help . my hatch rates average well over 90% so if your eggs are good. your chicks will be in good hands.
I have a surplus of silkie eggs and no room in my incubator. Boo hoo. If anyone is interested in purchasing silkie eggs for hatching please pm me. Might even consider a you hatch the eggs and we split the chicks????? Mostly whites, a few paints, and maybe some blacks. Located in Spartanburg, SC

I am so sorry. I came on here this morning to check on the chick. I hope this doesn't discourage you and you are going to try another hatch. Hugs from Greenville to you and the family.

Oh that is VERY sad news. I am so so sorry. I am sure it is very devastating. Big hugs to you and the kids. After all that and the excitement of it hatching. I do say get back up on the horse(and increase your temp a bit). Try it again. I am hoping my second hatch does better myself because the horror from the first one needs to be replaced with happy memories!!! I just want to experience the joy of little chicks all fluffy and cute running around! Anyway hugs to you again. I am sad for you.
