South Carolina

I am hearing the rumble of thunder nearby. We could use the rain to cool it off, I am a little nervous though. I heard the storms popping up are quite strong and damaging. I lost most of my buff orpingtons to the heat. They were in the coop and yard that is shaded by 2 huge cherry trees. I wasn't as worried about them as some of my others but I wet down their pens and gave them fresh water but we had to leave yesterday evening. I only have 1 hen and 2 roos left.

Patches wanted to join Kota on guard duty!

My SLW girls (and guy) have spent most of these hot days in the 'jungle' area of their run, either in these tall plants or perched in the giant bush that's in the middle. Everyone seems alright though, haven't lost a bird yet. I worry about my poor feeder mice though. My two does had litters around the same time, and now they spent most of their time feeding the 25 babies

i have to periodically put ice in their aquarium to cool them off.

It is 106 in the shade at my place today. I have fans and misters running on the chickens. I lost 2 silkies yesterday. One was my best male.

So far today, I have lost 2 young orpingtons.
I have been wetting the silkies down with the hose. I am hoping that helps. They won't stay under the misters. I was wetting one down and she dropped an egg on my toe.

If this continues much longer, I am moving a bunch of silkies into the house. I just have too many!!!! And I can't buy enough air freshner to cover that much chicken poo odor.

But I will do what ever I have to do.

Saluda, SC. I am researching before we begin to build our coop and then get chicks. I mostly want them for laying eggs, but will include a couple that are mostly ornamental (pets). We eat lots of eggs !!!!

Southern Bee Lady...you're a beekeeper , too? We are up to 4 steady hives and about to split to make another hive after the we extract.

How terrible that you lost your chickens to this crazy heat! We just got a bit of rain. I am hoping for more before the evening is out...but it's hit and miss.

Yes I've been a beekeeper for about 10 years. I have had as many as 100+ hives. Probably have 45 now. I was planning to cut down to 25-35 this year. Still got a ways to go.

I am sure you have found out how fascinating bees are. I started with 4 the first year and it grew and grew.

I'm so Lucky as of right now..The heat hasn't got one of my Chickens Yet!!! In my Yard they have lots of shade and lots of iced down water and a fan in the coop(which first night Hated...Second night LOVED).
Wanted to share pics of offically Lucy last babies...They love the pond and all it's shade. They sit and watch Piper watch the Bullfrogs in the pond(which she hates)
