Anyone wanna do a surgery for me? Tips? She's got potential and I don't want to loose her.....

I have done crop surgery on one of my buff orpingtons for impacted crop. Actually done it twice...about 4 months apart. She had a bunch of grass (fist size) knotted up in her crop both times. The first time I tried everything else I could but nothing worked. She was going to die so I tried it after much research. I don't think the surgery would work for sour crop. Not sure about a pendulous crop. I thought that was when the crop sagged and fails to empty. I have read about a chicken bra someplace that will hold it up so that it empties. Not sure since I have never had this happen.

I finally settled the "Fight at Night"...I installed an 8watt night light in my chicken coop. Where my chickens sleep it's very dark on their roost, so at dusk as they try to get to their roost they fly up on top of each other cause they can't see. Well tonight it was peaceful roosting time. The night light is on a timer and cuts on at 5 and off at 8pm. I just went down to check on them and it was so nice to hear nothing....everybody was on a roost and starting to sleep. That 8watt light gives off just enough light to see but not to keep them from sleeping. LOVE this Idea!!!!

Ok, so I have read many posts on how horrible guinea hens are at taking care of the keets. Well I hope we have an exception, our hen has at least 3 other guineas willing to help care for her keets. The other guineas walk around and will even sit on the keets, so at one time there is at least 3 guineas sitting on the nest. The keets follow all of those guineas, and I think 1 of the guineas sitting is a male. I hope this will continue, but I also know that they may get distracted and leave the keets in their quest to hunt. So far the guinea hasnt left the house, unless she has left them with surrogate hens to care for them. I have seen them eat and drink. I must say it is so adorable to watch those keets and the guineas care for them.

This is wonderful! I can't believe they have stayed in the coop! I think usually they are said to be bad moms because they go through wet grass and if a keet gets wet and chilled it dies pretty quick.
Keep us updated! I love to hear Guinea stories!

I am so glad to hear that this worked for you!

Mine fight over roosting spots well before dark and right next to the screen so I know mine can see but they just step on sisters to get them to move from the favored spot. I had that 100 wt light in the coop last year to try and keep them laying (didn't work) and they would still fuss over the top roost in the mornings. Sometimes, I think they just like playing King of the Hill!

Kris, the only luck I have had with guinea hens raising keets is to keep them in a pen. I left 2 hens last year in our big pen with some keets and they did pretty well. Any time I have turned them out the loose them--I have yet for a guinea hen to raise keets outside of a pen. Now a chicken hen will do a great job but not my guinea hens. I do wish you luck as it is wonderful to watch them grow and interact with the bigger guineas while being raised by guineas.
