Since this is a local post to where I live.......Could anyone tell me how much a Black Sex Link hen would cost? and does age affect price? thanks guys/gals

Most definitely on this breed the age would affect cost.
If I had any to sell and they were at POL or just started laying I would charge $25. That is my going price for laying hens.
If she were in her second season laying, I would charge $20. If she was 3 years old, she would be $10 and hope you might get a few more eggs from her.

However, you should be able to find hens cheaper than that but I would not guarantee what they would be like. I deworm and raise mine free ranging. So often ones I see for sale that are cheaper are older and not been cared for well. I am not saying there aren't great laying hens out there for $10 though. I am sure you could find some. I lucked up on a bunch this past spring for almost a song.

I wish you the best on your quest!

Is a pair enough company to keep warm for winter? I'm picking up my first pair of 6-8 week olds in the next couple of weeks

, but am a little worried that they won't produce much body heat. They'll be in a 4 x 5 outdoor brooder (A frame style with glass on the slanted sides and hardware cloth on the ends, top floor will have pine shavings and chips) until the larger run is completed. If not, would I have to find another bird the same age?

We are getting some for $13 each so I guess thats not bad for a Barred Rock. I think he said they are 5 months-1 yr old........

He is a nice looking bird. guessing he'll go 10 - 12 lb range. he is still fairly young. Has a nice shine to him so you know he is well fed.
I am so glad your loving your rose comb. For some reason - unknown to me - I love that single comb strain mine have been throwing.
I can't wait to see a picture of him about the first of April :)
My cockerel I entered in the fair is looking every bit as good as his daddy.
Keep us updated on those RIR's They do things other birds don't even dream about.
and if your raising them up and have a pen full of cockerels. either an old cock. or a couple guineas will make sure they keep it calm in the pen.

leirob007, could you give me your opinion on my RoseComb RIR rooster? I am loving this breed! This is "Gordy" and I think my best male. I have 2 RC hens I hatched for him this season too.

I never knew RIR's got so big! And he really has a wonderful personality. I really would like to know what you think....

Thank you! He is a big boy but I really do not know how much he weigh yet. He is just trying to crow this week. I will make sure I get another picture of him in the spring! Thanks again!

Hi everyone, I'm still hanging-in-there with all my chicks....looking for advice and ideas (again)...

I have
1 silkie chick, not sure if boy or girl, will get a mate (or two) when I figure out his sex.
5 australorp older chicks (pretty sure at least 2 roos)
6 teen easter eggers (not sure, but think I have 1 maybe 2 roos)
7 sexlink hens
1 RIR roo
Right now, I have all the sexlinks, RIR roo, and 5 teen EEs living together in the coop run area. It is 6x8 with 8 nest boxes. they are happy and have plenty of room. The rest of the group live in the garage in a kennel....for now.

I have access to 3 of these:

They sit on about a 3 foot stand. I will be working to convert them this weekend. My question is, who should I house together? I would like to keep my RIR roo with his girls, but should I keep australorps in their own area, with a rooster? Do I need one of these for meat birds (the roos I cant keep)? Do I need to make one of these for breeding/chicks? How about the EEs? Do they need a seperate one too? I'm thinking they all need to be separate if I keep a roo that matches them? And what about my little silkie? I'm all confused.....

In my opinion the Astralorps are your best setup at the moment. Those you have a chance to keep pure. Just because I am a RIR man does not mean I do not apreciate good birds and the Astralorps are top notch birds in anyones book.
The Sexlinks are about as good as it gets in a crossbreed ( they do not breed true ) ( my second most all time favorite birds )
the Easter Eggers the Sex-links, the RIR roo. I'd put together in your " mixed flock " Keep the Astralorps seperated. and I have never known what to do with a silky except they make a good natural incubator and have a tendancy to go broody ( if my information in correct there ) I know game bird breeders that insist on a silky to raise up the young. Silkies are loved to death by alot of people. They must make great birds. I have never owned one nor do I have the desire too. So do not think that because I would not know what to do with them that I am throwing off on a breed because I am not. I personally just do not want one.
I know the post was directed at " Everyone " and I am a " no-one " or "nobody" so if you don't like my idea ( and it is only a thought ) just toss it in the bin. but those are my thoughts on " If I inherited your flock tomorrow " BUT MY first article of business would be to get some RIR pullets to go with the roo and keep them seperated also.

I would sure be making me some coops from those! Lucky you! And putting pens on the side or front of them.

Congrats on the chickies! The math is catching up!
