I've got to get a picture of our new White Leghorns (3 hens, 1 roo) to upload, probably tomorrow.

Yes, well that would be the results if you upped the temp and the humidity, which is what the pantyhose does for the eggs. And that is the science of it.

That's what I was thinking too. The panty hose kept the humidity up. That must have something to do with it. Interesting!

What do you guys suggest I use for bug/parasite control/maintenance with my silkies? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've heard of DE, frontline, adams, ect...My concern is with being able to still use the eggs. Thanks, Nikki

70 degrees today! Chicken coop is coming along-waiting for the tin to arrive-was supposed to be here Monday but we know how that goes! 16 nest boxes up-pen is framed in-wire going up tomorrow!

Nikki, I use DE in my coops and nest boxes. Because it's the Food Grade DE, it's perfectly safe to even eat. You want to be sure you get the Food Grade though. I occasionally a bit in the food for the animals too. Helps with internal parasites. Hard to find but lasts a long time!

I have used DE (food grade only) both by scattering it on the ground for them to scratch in, spreading it in the nest boxes and I add it to their food about once a month as a regular wormer. You could also sprinkle the nest boxes with sevin dust, then top them off with fresh shavings so the eggs wouldn't touch the Sevin but it would still deter mites etc. The Sevin does an excellent job killing and preventing mites. I used it with my canaries before the chickens and never had mites kill any babies.

I get a 50 pound bag at Coleman's Farm Supply for about $30. It lasts for a long time. They also sell smaller bags. Just make sure you get the Food Grade DE, the other is for swimming pools and it is not safe.

This is what I am finishing up.
Some of you saw the frame last weekend when you visited and I have everything except the roofing on it.

I moved it into the dog kennel pen last night but still need to get the wire across the top of the pen secure so I can permanently keep chickens in there. Right now I am just taking them out there during the day and then hauling them back in at night. Such a pain that way! But safer!
