I wish I could make these but I do so much business on Sat. here at the farm I dare not go somewhere where I may get absolutely no buyers and for the price I ask for mine. I am not saying I am high but I do not sell mine cheap either.
I put a lot of time, effort and tons of money into this and for someone to want to buy a good laying hen for $10 is incredulous to me! No way could I raise one for that amount and have good healthy birds.
Even my breeding pairs or trios can be be more than some want to pay. I totally understand and do not find fault with anyone for it unless they get mad at me. I know what I am willing to pay for certain birds and I have my limits but I try not to cheat the seller out of anything either.

If I went to the one on Sat. I would take Sizzle and Frizzle pairs with maybe a few extra pullets to make trios. Most folks want laying hens and that is it. For specialty or novelty birds it is best for me to stay home and sell from the farm.

Not to mention....what if someone has something I think I need??? Really! I do not need more!!!

And welcome to our SC thread. We yak about stuff all the time!

And then CarolinaChickenKeeper,

I was thinking.........being new to the poultry scene, I'd probably benefit by having a chicken mentor. I have waaaay too many questions. Any SC volunteers, particularly in the upstate? ? Thanks, Nikki

It is nice to be on here with your questions and get different answers because what works for some does not work for others so it is best to get many opinions and see what works best for you.
If you ever want to ride over my way you are welcome to visit and ask as many questions as you like. I try to be helpful but my way may not work for you. It is really nice to see how others do things though. It gives us all sorts of ideas!
I am not far from Pauline, between Greer and Inman.

Well we know *someone* will be looking at layers more than likely - even though *he* says *I* have enough chickens.

I really do not expect to find things like silkies, marans, etc, but am going to go look anyways

I expect more common birds.

I do have odds and ends I could take but have not set up to sell so I won't bother.........

Don't think we'll be driving an hour to Gaffney

Maybe there will be something closer to us one day.

I got a couple free wood pallets yesterday

The good thick ones! So plans for another coop are now being drawn on whatever scrap paper I find when I get an idea. I think we'll be getting some of my mom's old cages. I'm thinking we'll be able to take those apart and use the wire to make the run. . .She has a ton of cages, she used to raise exotic birds.

You MIGHT just consider selling the cages and then using the proceeds to buy the appropriate wire for your run.
(It would probably work out better........AND you wouldn't be destroying something useful.)

just a thought...

They are homemade cages. . .not decorative or anything, just made for breeding pairs, and they are old. Taking them apart only involves cutting off the little metal rings that hold the pieces together.
