I bought my avian netting off of ebay and I've been very happy with it. It's been out there for 6 years now and it's holding up great. Ebay was cheaper than the other mail order companies when I bought mine.

That's where I saw the best deals and was thinking about buying from. Thanks for the tip!

Ivermectin is used to prevent heartworms. Just do not use it on collie or collie mixes. A lot of people use it instead of the medication through a vet but there are benefits to using vet supplied meds. Usually if your pet comes up positive for heartworms on a product and you've been on a product throug a vet the company who makes the product will pay to treat your animal. There are also excellent flea and heartworm combo meds out now. I use trifexis on my dogs. Kills fleas dead in 30 minutes all month long, kills parasites, prevents heartworms

Well, putting my little ladies in the coop for a couple of nights seems to have done the trick -- they've put themselves to bed the last two nights! I'm still blocking the door, though, because I don't have the whole top of the run covered yet and we haven't lived here long enough yet for me to know what kind of critters live in the woods behind us. My husband isn't convinced I really need to cover my whole run, but I'd rather overdo it now than wish I had later...
My mom has lost 4 or 5 hens to a sharp-shinned hawk this spring -- the brazen thing sits right in the lower branches of a tree and has staring contests with her! It grabbed one hen but dropped it, and she put it in her little "hospital pen" right outside her bedroom window. A few days later, the hawk dropped right into that tiny area and took the hen again. It's amazing how she can go for years without a predator problem, and then something zeroes in on her birds and goes on a killing spree! Last year, she let her chickens out right before dawn ONE TIME because she had to drive my dad to Charleston for a post-op doctor's appointment, and one time was all it took. Something ripped the head off her sweet Golden Comet rooster and left him lying in the middle of the pen.

He went down defending his ladies, though, and they were all fine.
If anything messes with my girls, you can bet I'll be out there waiting with a shotgun the next night!

Yeah, I've got it all together, huh? I'll blame it on the heat and not my old age.
Thanks to whomever nominated me. Super sweet!

I just get on here when I can and yak my head off. Some read what I write and others do not. That is okay with me. I may not know much but I spread what I can. And that is not the stinky stuff we step in either! I know what you were thinking!

With the recent rains my birds are getting covered up in bugs. Nicole and Kimberly helped me do the free range birds one night when they cooped up but I have been trying to get a pen done every night because as soon as I finish up I will have to start all over again. If you have been to my farm you understand why.
The horrid lice and mites love to live in the wood we build our coops and run with. I soak the roosts with Poultry Protect and am now, much to my dismay, using Eprinex on the birds and chicks. I hate any man made chemicals but I heard a few months ago of someone losing several birds to lice or mites. Not sure which her birds had but she did not realize it until too late and lost them. Eprinex will also treat for intestinal worms and is okay to eat the eggs after treatment, too. I buy Eprinex online at either Cutler Supply or First State Vet. It would last someone a long time as long as they do not have as many birds as I do. I am on my second bottle already. I treat 2 weeks apart and then check in another month. Whew! Lotsa work there.

For your cover over your run you should check out the plastic netting like I used on my brooder. It is about $11 or $13 a roll and is very tough for plastic. Good to let snow through and not stretch too badly. It won't keep out raccoons as they will chew through it if they really want to but it will certainly keep out hawks. Even the lighter stuff may work but it is more stretchable and may sag as the summer goes on.

Actually Heartgard and other heartworm medicines for pets use Ivermectin as the active ingredient. I tried buying heartworm chew tablets for my five jack russells not realizing that you had to have a prescription! My vet said he'll write me the prescription for use at 1-800-Pet Meds, but it will cost me $12. What a crock! They gotchya coming or going. I think it's rediculous since I can buy Ivermectin for livestock without a prescription...I just don't know how many drops to put on a piece of bread for a 12-pound dog. It would save me a ton of $$$.

Now now be nice. The clinic that charges 12 for a prescription might be the one I work at. (I am in Sumter btw) All clinics will charge. We have to. It takes up a lot of time to write out prescriptions for various people at the end of the day for products we keep on hand. The company will not guarantee any product if it's not purchased through a vet. Always keep that in mind.

As for ivermectin yes you can use it on collies but only if dosed right. I wouldn't though unless you use it in heartgard. I am a worrywart.
