On another note, out of 16 silkies I hatched this year I have 3 hens. What are the odds of that? I have 10 more babies that are not big enough yet to tell sex and 4 silkie eggs in the bator but what is it with the roosters this year?

Whew! I am so looking forward to cooler temps in another day or two. I was just out for 2 hours with a customer picking out chickens and I thought I would die out there! At least he loaded them up in an AC truck to take them back up to Greensboro. They will have a great cool ride!

I'm heading out to the Feed Store now. Did anyone see my question about medicated feed? How long do we feed it to the chicks? Do they stay on it for a few months or just for one bag. There is lots of conflicting stuff on here about it.

Hot...hot...HOT out there. Like 100 in the shade and the humidity is a killer. My chickens have ice packs all inventor coop today

There is conflicting stuff about it and I feel it has to do with where they are at (brooder or out on the ground). I do not use much medicated starter but have to because the Gamebird starter comes that way where I buy it. I feed it to birds that are 6 months old and older. My Marans that are over 2 years old still get some of it mixed in their layer. Not for the medicated part but the 28% protein is good for them if they can't get as many bugs as they would like.

You can skip it and if you notice a problem later you can medicate them with Sulmet or something.

Thanks Amy. One thought I had was to mix medicated and regular starter, but that probably won't make a huge difference. I know there is a certain age when Cocci is a pretty big risk and was just wanting to make sure we weren't right in the middle of it. Also, didn't know how much the heat played a factor in it. They are in their run, so they are outside, but are limited to what area they have access to.
I'm ordering some Sulmet and a few other first aid items today from Cutlers so we will be prepared for anything that may hit them. Right now, it's off to put ice in their water, give them frozen watermelon, and then to get some food for them.

My husband was telling me the other day what he would do if we won the lottery. I said to him I did not know if there would be enough money left after we built the new barns and runs for the poultry(plus put up a predator fence around the whole property) for any of the things he was talking about! (ie. new house, MotorHome?) Of course when we win that lottery we can hire someone to take care of the birds while we are gone I guess in that motorhome! I wonder if we could have one built with cages so we could take some of the birds with us?

Hello everybody - it's 110 degrees in the shade here at my yard today. I actually rescheduled with a customer who wanted to come at 2:30, I asked her to wait til after dinner. It's miserable, I've given the ducks clean water in the pool and all the chicks have fresh cold drinking water but the birds are panting and I'm melting. We have some cloud cover right now......and I think I see the trees moving, maybe a breeze!!

I sure have high hopes for this weekend as for cooler temps.

Amy, I'm so sorry about your car.....and your husband.

I have one of those too, he can never find his keys at home but go to work and they'll be hanging in the car. I don't let him drive my car anymore except on the rare occasion that he's running an errand for me. I hope they'll find it still in good shape. How much gas did you have in it? I imagine they will drive it til it runs out then leave it somewhere. If your car is like mine, they won't get far (can't afford to fill the tank too often anymore).

As for the medicated chick starter question, I don't use medicated chick starter so I can't help there. I think the birds should be on chick starter until about 16 weeks of age.

Now, fingers crossed that it will be cooler when my customer comes tonight. Hope you've all found a nice air conditioned place to hide from this heat.
