i would not shoot the hawk either, as long as the game warden was talking to me , but as i see him go around the corner if the hawk was in range i dont think he would get the chance to kill number 36 i know your birds mean alot to you and they are expensive so you have to do what you have to do to protect your chickens. i dont care how pretty the hawk might be

well, it might be illegal to shoot them with bullet, but you an certainly use a paint ball marker (aka paint ball gun) to hit them. We have a blue heron that is protected, but likes to hunt our koi it has killed 2 that were over 15 inches, too large for it to eat so it just killed them ad left them. After hitting it twice with the paint ball marker, it has decided to fish elsewhere

I just happen to have a paintball gun!! Sounds like you need to borrow it Huckleberryfarm!! We actually considered rat shot at a distance last night but was scared to injure it...So far all chickens here are safe, just not happy being locked up.I will protect my chicks....oneway or another...

We have crows and Jays along with tons of colorfull finches since I feed them....heck if the feeder gets low the cardinals get a little scary!lol Maybe the lil hawk will move on soon but if not I ,like farmer john, live all alone in the country!Bad thing is dnr just released some locally and this may be a transmitter marked bird!

Then the 3 S method won't work for you but you can shoot and drive it over the county line to dump.

I have been very happy with my LGD. She isn't perfect but she has decreased my stress level a lot!

Two thoughts about discouraging hawk visits: water hose and firecrackers.

Water hose: get a really long hose and a high powered nozzel. Mom once hosed down a hawk 20+ feet up her oak tree. When she got tired of holding the hose, she passed it to my brother. Hawk got the message that they weren't giving up. Hawk got the same treatment the next time. At least he no longer perches in that oak.

Firecrackers: I had a dickens of a time finding old fashioned "bottle rockets". I stopped at a fireworks store along I-95 and got three different kinds of larger rockets. A short piece of PVC pipe is my launcher. The "shoooo" lets the neighbors know I'm not shooting a gun. The "BANG" makes my hawk think I *AM* shooting a gun.

I hope this helps. You could always do like my daughter (now age 13) and grab a rake and go screaming across the yard at the hawk.

We were told about the transmitter birds. Isn't that sad? We also live out with no neighbors but that stupid hawk, who is not that little, must know our thoughts. At the first sight of us, he scrams. I hate him and his screeching.

If it were a different day, I would love to! My husband is arriving home from Honduras sometime that day. And it's a long drive with just me and the kids. So, no.... but I'll be dreaming about it!

Well, it looks like Saturday, November 5th will be a good day for the First Augusta ChickenStock. This is my first time planning one. I want to make it a fun family affair with games, activities, hayrides, judging... I am open to suggestions and helpers.
