South Carolina

And if those are not enough I have about 10 more that the neighbor doesn't care for and they spend too much time here at my place!
I am so tired of taking cats and kittens to the shelter. Okay, so I only did it once this year. It breaks my heart for some reason.
I would love to keep them all (I am a huge cat lover!) but one orange tabby has started stalking my Silkie chicks and Jolie is going out of her mind trying to keep it run off of them.
Only my adult cat is fixed and she doesn't even stay around anymore and soon my kitten, Peaches, will need to be spayed. But no more cats! (Geez, I think you all know I am not strong in the animal dept.

I know what you mean! I adopted these two after a friend found them in the woods, had the mom spayed and was left with the litter... A few vet bills later they're eating me out of my house and we cannot seem to keep the fleas at bay no matter what brand of spot-on I try... granted if they're still with me at the end of school they might just be in for the long haul. They're great kids.

If anyone has extra LF roosters in the Greenville area and wants to sell them please let me know. Yes, they will go for eating so if you are wanting to find them a good home not inside someone's tummy then this is not the place.

Thanks!

As I sat this afternoon with 3 silkies on my lap and a couple running around my feet, I begin to wonder if I'm doing everything I can for them. Can someone tell me if there is anything special I should be feeding these little buggers that have stole my heart. My whole family has become attached to these babies. I know one time Amy mention giving them extra vitamin E. How do you do this? This is why I'm asking about special feed.
Also tonight I sat and watched a report on 60 minutes about homeless families living in cars with their children. It broke my heart. I thought how many families I could feed with my eggs. I give my eggs away to people that are struggling in our church. When I deliver them to the families, they are all smiling and happy. It makes me feel great that God has allowed me to have these beautiful animals that give so much. I'm truly thankful to also have such wonderful people on BYC to help me take good care of them.

I often give Vit E to the Silkies making a form of mash. Wheat Germ Oil (WGO) comes in a gal. container with added Vit E and you can use rolled oats, wheat bran, flax meal and make it stick together in little balls or chunks with the WGO. I also add red pepper flakes to deworm them in this mixture, sometimes as often as once a month. Adding a bit of powdered garlic and Dandelion Root can help them maintain a proper immune system and organ function.

Also, feed as little corn as you can get by with. Corn is not good for Silkies. They have a harder time digesting it and it throws their body functions off. Most people do not notice it but show breeders spend a lot of time with their birds and have started feeding their Silkies a better diet.

No, I don't get to do all this as much as I used to but I did for a long time and raised my beloved Fancy this way. She is one tough and beautiful lady!

Wow! Amy I know I could count on you to let me know about my silkies. My husband just built me a new silkie pen and bought me a new camera for my 25th ann. He loves them as much as I do. Going to town to get wheat grem oil now.

Also Amy I would like to have summet on hand just in case I start having problems. I went to TSC and the only thing I saw was tablet form. Is there a liquid form and how do you give it to your chickens? Also with this do you need to not eat the eggs for a couple of weeks? Alot of questions on a Monday morning, go ahead and start me a tab!!!

Susanne,

When I called in my entries for the Barnwell SC show, the gentleman asked me if I had any for sale. Someone contacted him wanting to know if he knew of anyone that had some silkies, he does not want show quality because he is wanting them for broodys.

I could not remember if your website was huckleberry farm or huck farm, so I gave him your name & told him you raise a lot of them, and contact you to see if any were available right now
