Is anyone going up to the Polk County Flock swap this Saturday? Sounds like a really good time!

I want to, but I don't think I can tear myself away from my hatch this Saturday. I'll be glued to the incubator - testing out hatching in cartons this time.

I won't get to go to the poultry swap this weekend so please tell me all about it and post some pics if you can (pretty please) - this Farm Tour that I see in the thread -- i went to the link but couldn't click on anything on the site to find out more info - - do they do this only once a year? This sounds like something I would love to do as well.

I think the Upstate Farm Tour is once a year. This was our first time going to that and it was worth the admission. Last year we did the Greenville Urban Farm Tour and it was also very informative. I don't see a date for this year, but I hope they do it again!

Here's some weekly silkie pics

3 1/2 month old chicks. I'm *guessing* they're both pullets, which is kind of a bummer, I wanted to see what kind of cockerels my birds would produce. But I'm pretty happy with these two. I have young turkeys and birds EVERYWHERE now. 17 turkey poults of various ages up to 2.5 months, all of them a rainbow of colors, I'm excited to see how they feather out

Hi everyone! I'm new to the forums and no chickens yet. I'm planning on getting some girls come spring. I'm set on buff orpingtons but have waffled between chicks or pullets. I'm back to pullets today. More money in shipping but I want to start small and I've read about how tough shipping is on little chicks. Seems like the less chicks in the order the more risk for them.

Was really happy to find this thread and see all the other SC peeps.

I do have one question for those in the central/coastal area. We're in Manning and I know when we moved here in '09 we have had to battle a lot more canine issues with our dogs (we'd been in Sumter before). Suddenly fleas are an ongoing battle and worms. How hard is it to control pests that afflict the chickens in these areas? We've got A LOT of squirrels where we live. Do they present any issues? We have 1.4 acres but a big chunk is wooded and we are still working on clearing it. We also are in an established neighborhood. No HOA and we are outside city limits but I will probably avoid a rooster for now.

We are new raising chickens in SC. I just want to comment on the chicken vs pullets. We have had two shipments of live chicks and with both all survived and are still growing like weeds. They are both over 12 weeks old. I think it depends on the quality of the flock they came from and the season they are sent. Our were delivered to us in late February and one in early March.

I live in the upstate and we have TONS of squirrels and crows. They don't really cause a problem here. And woods, well that's all I have!! I myself cleared out a big patch of it this past fall. Have the roosters side done, still need to finish the hen side. I make community areas for both and all breeds together. Works the best that way. If you plan on having roosters and breeding, best to keep as many roosters together as possible. Actually the more roos you have together the better.

We are in the Upstate, but at our old house we put the chickens in an old dog run that was wooded. Never had any issues with the squirrels. Back then I was feeding pellets and they didn't seem interested in those. At our new house we have a lot of voles/field mice and I've never seen one in the coop (raised), but they have tunnels all around the run. They were probably there before, but the hens dig them open for me to see now.

My first chicks were shipped and all arrived alive in July - I ordered 25, got 30. We've had a heck of a time with fleas and the dogs this year. First time we've found ticks on them too. I switched them from oral medication to the Seresto collars - so far so good.

I really think I need a silkie. Once again the rain has thwarted my plans on making progress on my modest little chicken coop. I will get up early in the morning and try again. I have realized that I have a favorite. She's the least attractive of the bunch but she's as human friendly as you can get. The golden comet Daisy. She is the only one that will eat from my hand and allows me to hold her. She even talks to me! Curious.....I think there is a law that says you must have a chicken named Daisy and a Rhode Island Red named "Red". Hope you are all doing well and may we have beautiful weather here in South Carolina. Good night.

Our Daisy is a Barred Rock. No Red, though we do have a RIR named Doom.
