South Carolina

I really think I need a silkie. Once again the rain has thwarted my plans on making progress on my modest little chicken coop. I will get up early in the morning and try again. I have realized that I have a favorite. She's the least attractive of the bunch but she's as human friendly as you can get. The golden comet Daisy. She is the only one that will eat from my hand and allows me to hold her. She even talks to me! Curious.....I think there is a law that says you must have a chicken named Daisy and a Rhode Island Red named "Red". Hope you are all doing well and may we have beautiful weather here in South Carolina. Good night.
I spent most of my day in upstate SC - mowing and such and then visiting my parents. The weather was lovely. Then I drove home to the foothills of NC, hoping for a swim, but ran right into the rain I'd left behind early this morning. At least NC doesn't have a drought problem this year. Surely we are about topped off.

Does anyone caponize or know someone who caponizes around the Upstate? My BF is determined to keep Peepers and I don't want him fertilizing my hens. Since he will not be eaten, I would prefer to have him chemically caponized. I know I probably sound cray cray, but he really likes that darn bird. And that bird follows him around everywhere!

I love my Silkies! We don't consider them chickens since they neither look not act like chickens ;) They live in my garden and keep it free of bugs. They make the best cross breeds! My aviator is our Silkie/ EE cross.

Welcome! This is such a sweet picture. We are in Johnston, SC. We have a large handsome BR roos named Colonel. He is spending some time with two of our BR hens and so far we have gotten 5 eggs that are sitting under our broody bantam.

Heading out to visit with the fun and intelligent Kris and Robert and collect my chicks that I tried to fill their bator up with so Robert would not set more eggs. Didn't work but I felt I did my part!

Hi,
I am a newbie South Carolina chicken owner, in Columbia. I have just found out I have an 8 week old cochin mix roo, and I'm looking to do a switch A roo:) for a blue cochin pullet, hoping my children wont notice too much! They have become fairly attached to Nellie/Ned (I have too , I must admit!) And we of course can not have roos:( Does anyone know of a cochin breeder that may have 8 week or so pullets? Thank!

Just popping in to say thanks for the replies. It's helpful to know the squirrels won't be an issue. When I say we have a lot we have A LOT in this neighborhood. :) I'm so anxious to get my flock going but I'm sticking to my promise of next spring so the husband doesn't get upset with me. I might swing back to trying an order of baby chicks. I like the idea, just apprehensive of losing them because of a rough journey. If I didn't have my heart set on Orpingtons I'd just get some at the local tractor supply come spring and buy whatever but I really fell in love with Orps.

You might have alot squirrels but wait until they meet their new neighbor.....SUPER CHICKEN! I would suggest that you come here and see if you can get them locally. Just ask. I am sure if someone has them, they would be willing to hook you up. I have Buff Orpingtons now and hope to get one or two roo so I can breed the better ones for a sustainable flock. I don't know when, because we have a number of other breeds of chicks right now. We are breeding out Colonel (Barred Rock Roo) to his BR ladies and have a few eggs under a broody and the others will be put in the incubator once the current hatch is finished.

I love my BRs! I want more. We are going to build a bigger coop.
