Two more chicks. Pure silkie and silkie x oegb. Normal silkie chicks are tiny, being bantams, but the silkie cross is even smaller. Sooo cute

New baby chicks as of yesterday. 5 out of 8 eggs hatched so far.

Hoping all 8 will hatch. This is the first ever hatching/broody for this particular hen. She was previously un-tried for broodiness.

Marked on the Calendar - -one of the girls laid her first egg today.............on the roost. perfectly balanced on the roost board.

It was paper thin with a flat dent on one side from dropping on the roost. How do you get them to lay in the nest boxes ?

Oh, I posted it on the picture in the album. PR/EE and PR/PR. Mama broody is an OEGB...but she is the only game hen I have left. She has not laid any eggs since Feb or March, but she gets to be the broody. 6 total hatched. She abandoned the other 2 eggs today at noon. Egg-taupsy showed they we non-viable anyways. Mama hen knows. I am happy with 6 healthy baby chicks.

You can try to put a golf ball in each nesting box. I have an older rooster that I put in with younger girls who are about to start to lay. He tells and shows them were to go.

It is really neat to come through and read all the posts from our new members. I still remember getting into chickens and all the new wonders I came across. It is fun and I get some great chuckles out of reading your new adventures.

This is when it is exciting. Soon you may get like me and skip a day of even collecting eggs. Can you even imagine? I have more than 40 chicken and Guinea pens to collect from plus free ranging chickens and 9 duck pens. It gets old, especially when you try to remember to write on the eggs the pens you are selling eggs out of and ones that you better not mark or else you will have to find room in the incubator to set them. Ugh.....
