South Carolina

We are relocating to Townville, SC in a few weeks and need information on having chickens. Any info would be greatly appreciated!!!

I don't know where that is, BUT , if its not rural check and see if there are limits on the amount of chickens you can have, no roosters ect..

I'm in Sumter. Fairly new to chickens again. I grew up working on a farm that had six commercial chicken houses for Columbia Farms and we took care of the runts. Now have a pair of Buff Orpingtons, pair of Cuckoo Marans, and a pair of Brown Leghorns. A bit of a different game than those meat birds. I want my kids to realize that food doesn't just come from a grocery store.

Hey there! Is anyone here located in Sumter County? I'm looking to find out the chicken ordinance laws here!

I'm in Kershaw county. Maybe you would have to go to the county building and talk to planning and zoning dept. Or better yet, go to Sumter county website.

What breed would people recommend for a first time chicken owner? Looking for a small flock of 3 egg layers for my backyard in Columbia, SC. Something that is docile, low maintenance and can handle the SC climate well. Thanks in advance!

I'm 25 min away, I have OEG bantam , bantam EE, and black stars. They all lay awesome. Everyday. You just need to make sure they have plenty of fresh water and a shady place to escape the hot Carolina sun. My birds are nice :)

Although we are new to chickens too, and only have a few months experience, I would recommend bantams. At least to start with. They are easy to care for and very personable. Since they are smaller they also don't need as much room as a standard size. They are also quieter if you are worried about noise and neighbors. I have done a ton of reading and research, and this seems to be the typical starters.

Hey My daughter and I just finished building our own incubator and are on the hunt for eggs to hatch! We are looking for friendly, fluffy and egg purpose breeds. I'm interested in adding some english orps, Cochins, and/or Marans to the flock. We are near columbia. Does anyone have any hatching eggs they would be willing to sell or anyone who could point me in the right direction?

Its located in Andersen county near Anderson, SC. Do you know the ordinances for this county/area?

As long as you're not in the city limits you are good to go. Make sure you have approval if you're going to sell eggs. Clemson has a lot of good info about SC state rules and regulations. Dr. Helm is really nice and can answer any question you could come up with.
Be prepared for neighbors and observers if you have a lot of roosters though. And if you see a white sedan parked and a guy taking notes after observing whatever he can see from the road, don't panic. You can call it in, but it's most likely the police making sure you're not involved in cock fighting. Apparently there is a big initiative going on to stop illegal fights.
Best wishes with your birds!
