South Carolina

Good Morning All! Does anyone know a site for plants that are poisonous to poultry? Is there something on this site I am over looking? I have been having some problems with my pen of cochins and I am wondering if it is the Dog Fennel growing on the edge of the pen. When I do not let them out for a few days they eat the stuff. Of course they have plenty of food but they eat it anyway for greens I guess. Only the cochins are eating it.

Not in South Carolina - but very close - Union County , North Carolina ...
If you want more birds, I bought mine from a lady in Monroe - 1.50 each Barren Rocks - they have so far been healthy and perfect little ladies - I would be glad to get you the info.
Welcome

Anyone know of anyone raising black or white orpingtons? I ordered some splash eggs from this site but I would rather get them locally if humanly possible. I have fallen in love with orps.

Hello everyone! I posted here last year to get some information about chickens- well, shortly after that, my son broke his leg at football practice so I had to put the chicken plans on hold. Other stuff got in the way but finally- I am ready to have chickens. Well, actually, I've been ready for awhile but had to get everyone else ready for them. lol So now I am in the market for some chickens. My coop will be here next weekend so yeah, that's where I am in the world of chickens so far. Does anyone know of a local resource for buying chickens (upstate SC)? I am flexible on age of chickens and kind of flexible on breeds. I have small children so I need something that will be good with them- I am thinking something like Barred Plymouth Rocks, maybe Rhode Island Reds, maybe something laying colored eggs. The maximum I want right now is 9. What do you guys think?

Amy, Have you thought about getting a few silkies? My kids love them. They are docile little pets and really the only ones that like to be held for any length of time. At least on our farm. I'm not too far from you and will let you know if we start to get chicks. Right now I just have a few hens laying. Everyone else is too little.

RedBug---Nitrates are basically fertilizer. In a fish tank you test for nitrates which are byproducts of fish poo. Basically the water gets hyperfertilized and can kill the fish. Some plants produce nitrates and that is the problem. Great for the compost pile, not so great for the chickens.

TheWilson---Orpingtons are great larger breed chickens for kids. My 7 year old picks the young pullets up and doesn't ever get as much as a nip. I have had some experience with other chickens, but they are being replaced with orps because they have awesome personalities. I have heard silkies are the same, they just lay smaller eggs.

Does anyone around Charleston know how much it would cost to have roosters cleaned and ready to eat? I hate to ask this but I am sick and tired of getting attacked a couple times a day. I have no desire to do away with them myself but if something should happen I would eat the darn birds.
