Amy- On Saturday (National Poultry Day), he joined a new flock with about 80 hens to love on, rather than just my 10 girls. Apparently he needs, a uh, a larger selection. Little George is so cute, he's going to visit Furman University with me next Friday for a student forum on raising chickens. Better be on his best behavior- cock-a-doodle-do!

PS- If anyone is looking for turkeys to raise, Patientwait Farms in Piedmont has started hatching out for Thanksgiving. They have Jersey Buffs & Narragasetts poults for $9 a piece. www.patientwaitfarms.com

Sorry!

I think she was going to take them to her mom's or a friend's to watch them. My question would be .... what are they in? I can tell you that I brood mine in big tubs at my house and then move them to the farm. Around 2 weeks old, they discover they can fly and I'll start finding them on the top of the bin. At four weeks, depending on the breed, I think anything open on the top would not be working. If it has a top on it, I think they'll be fine.

Off to enjoy the day!

I have several bins - some from walmart - but my fave is a long rubbermaid one I found at lowes. To keep some of the flying down the first couple of weeks, I have my dog crate's wire divider laid over the top

It came with the crate & my dog is too big to have her crate divided now.......so had to find a use for it

Around 2-3 weeks I move into a wood & wire brooder in basement........then, depending on feathering, from there to outside tractor with hardware cloth.

So you have 2 week old chicks in a bin/brooder. And you want to know if they would be fine for 2 weeks without anyone checking them?
I would not do that for several reasons. I cannot list them all but main ones - what if they knock water over & no one there to refill? What if brooder lamp falls - that can cause a fire......... so many things could happen.

Of course I may have read this wrong anyways

No not going on a two week vactation (that would be nice)! We aren't leaving for another two weeks, gone for 4 days. So it would be 2 days without people here constantly, a friend will be dropping by on the second day to fill water/feed. So it will be 1, 24 hour period that no one will be with them.

Essentially they will be four weeks old. I was just trying to figure out if I could transport them in the 18 gallon bins/rubermaid containers or if they will have outgrown those. . .I'm thinking the big guys will just have to go in the coop, they are currently in a cage. Then we should be able to put the rest of them in the cage and a rubbermaid container depending on the size. . .I doubt they'll be too big for the cage! That way I wont have to worry about the little ones being alone. Pretty sure we wont be using the lights by then seeing as we keep them off most of the time already.

I was thinking.........being new to the poultry scene, I'd probably benefit by having a chicken mentor. I have waaaay too many questions. Any SC volunteers, particularly in the upstate? ? Thanks, Nikki
