South Carolina

Hey all! Just wanted to pop in and say hello. . . we were without internet for a few days this week (don't ask, AT&T is dumb) and I was going crazy! Hope all my SC peeps didn't experience any wind damage last night/this morning. Sheesh, it's sunny here now, but still blowing out there!

Did someone mention a party? Was that huckleberryfarm? Sounds good to me- let me know when and where

My broody Black Star is still a-settin'. One of the eggs cracked so now she's got 8. I love to watch her walk around beating up the other chickens when she does come off the nest

Those poor chickens must think she has lost her mind, walking around clucking, fluffed out, holding out her wings, pecking the poop out of everybody!

I just spent an hour busting up old firewood logs out back. The logs are about 15-20 inches in diameter and you should see the meal worms and big white beetle grubs I found. I filled up half of an empty 3 lb margarine container with them, then I head to the coop and feed the girls. If you want to see the closest thing to a shark frenzy...try this. If you let them grab the whole grub they run around with it and hardly know what to do with it, but if you hold the grub by the head tightly, the chickens will rip the thing apart and eat it. Seems once they taste all that protein juice in the critter...they go nuts! It's a serious chicken frenzy...they absolutely love "live grub and mealworm" treat day!

Are you sure you're using Codex FOOD GRADE DE? If you use the non-food grade (the DE used in swimming pool filtration), that suppose to be toxic. With Food grade as a food additive, the "dosage" is not to exceed 2% of the quantity of food given. Additionally, it's still best to keep the DE out of respiratory systems (even with food grade), that's why they recommend distributing it with a face mask/filter since it does contain silica (long term exposure can lead to silicosis). Once the DE is settled down on the ground or what have you...it suppose to be okay. They also caution you from getting it in your eyes as the microscopic diatomes can be abrasive to membranes of the eye. That said, I think Food Grade DE is great stuff and will always use it around the coop, garden and house! I love the fact that it's a safe, natural pestcide. I hate using sprays or powdered poisons that can harm my children and pets!

My oldest birds are now only 6-weeks old...their new to bugs, but learning quickly. As they get older I wouldn't be surprised if they don't throw these grubs into the crop like a quick shot of whiskey! Some of these grubs are 2 inches long and more than a half inch wide...it's a meal. These are the kind you see those nutjobs on Televisions "Man versus Wild" and "Survivorman" eat!

what a great time in Irmo today at the swap meet i met some really nice people. i can only speak for myself. i had a wonderful time the rain held off. sold some really nice chicks. i took about 30 and sold out in less than 30 min. i could have brought more, but the weather at home changed my mind. for whoever did not get a chance to come you really missed some great fellowship.

Aksmama - when you say "black star", do you mean the actual breed black star chickens or are you referring to black sexlinks? I have a friend with a "black star" rooster and there is a certain breed with this name. I would like to find out some information about these chickens - as, of course, now I want some too. I've hatched a couple of chicks but not sure what I will get. Everything I search on the internet just gives me the black sex-link info and they are definately not sexlink birds. Very beautiful, distinct looking birds.
