Are you sure you're using Codex FOOD GRADE DE? If you use the non-food grade (the DE used in swimming pool filtration), that suppose to be toxic. With Food grade as a food additive, the "dosage" is not to exceed 2% of the quantity of food given. Additionally, it's still best to keep the DE out of respiratory systems (even with food grade), that's why they recommend distributing it with a face mask/filter since it does contain silica (long term exposure can lead to silicosis). Once the DE is settled down on the ground or what have you...it suppose to be okay. They also caution you from getting it in your eyes as the microscopic diatomes can be abrasive to membranes of the eye. That said, I think Food Grade DE is great stuff and will always use it around the coop, garden and house! I love the fact that it's a safe, natural pestcide. I hate using sprays or powdered poisons that can harm my children and pets!
