South Carolina

I have heard so many people say they are losing chicks from whatever TSC they buy from this year.
I know the chicks I got from Meyer this year have been really weak. I have lost several while all my other brooders are doing very good. The Strombergs chicks have really thrived along with the 2 black Cayuga ducklings I have in the brooder with them that I hatched.

I did just hatch some really weak d'Uccles. The other 2 sets of hatching eggs from 2 other breeders have done very well and are bouncing around but this other breeder has very poor chicks and I have tagged them all so not to breed weak birds. I hope my last set of d'Uccle eggs do well, too.

Still fighting being sick. I am dragging but too bad, I have work to get done. I know I should be in church this morning but my heart is there even if my body is not.
I will go now and grab up a paintbrush so I can get maybe a bit done today. That hill from the barn to the house gets longer each day and it is going to be a HOT one today!

I hope everyone enjoys this lovely day we have been blessed with!

I have never seen anything like what they do.
Right after the wings have feathered out, they simply stop eating. Stand around, not drinking either.

I am feeding medicated chick grower from Purina. I tried yogurt, electrolytes and Nutri-drench. I also treated them for coccidia. They are in the same brooders with chicks I hatched here. NONE of my hatched chicks have died with these symptoms. All the chicks were bought at the same TSC.

I bought all the TSC chicks at different times. California Greys - bought 6 - 5 dead
Broilers - bought 6 - 1 dead
EE - bought 6 - 4 dead
Red pullets - bought 6 - 2 dead

Nadine, do you happen to have a rooster that is not related to my Araucana rooster that I bought from you ? And maybe a hen ?

Enola, sold out of my extra hens already.
I have one red roo left that has blue feathers in his wings and undercoat. Looks exactly like his dad out of blue hens. These are not related to your Boom Boom.
So far this year none of my Araucana eggs have been fertile. Come June they will be good to go but right now they are slow. And one hen decided to go broody so I just stuff all their eggs under her.

Happy Easter All!

We've been enjoying Aratoo, the sneaky little cuss. He got out of his quarantine pen and went on walkabout. Then he got out of the main pen and landed in the baby run. Uncle Blackie (who really is uncle to more than half these 48 chicks) tolerates Aratoo. Blackie body-slammed the fence to break up an altercation between Aratoo and a Barred Rock hen. Blackie scared them both off and stood there like "ah, order has been restored!" I think Aratoo has found his pen to live in.

Now what Nadine didn't tell you is what ELSE she sent me home with... THREE kittens. DH was not impressed. Oldest Daughter picked a Calico. Son picked a Ginger Tom (with white tummy and feet) because he was reminded of our dearly departed Oliver. Middle Daughter picked a "solid black" younger kitten. Kitty has a teeny white throat blaze and tummy spot. I was all for the older litter because they would almost be ready for solid food.

The kittens have finally forgiven us for not having real mother's milk. They are all teething and want to spend a couple of minutes chewing on the bottle nipple. When they get down to business, they really suck down the milk. We are still measuring in mililiters, but the Tom takes the record for most intake in one session (slightly more than 10 ml). I love the way he "smiles" when his tummy is getting full and all is right in the world! He was also the first to purr. He is starting to try to play. This evening he was snuggling my hands and rolling around in my lap. Middle Daughter suddenly yelled "Look at your shirt!" The stinker had pooped on me. The girls are now calling him the Ninja Pooper!

DH plays with the babies when he thinks no one is watching. I knew kitten cuteness would prevail! Thank you again, Nadine!

1 of the hens I recently purchased was referred to as a black comet. Do you think this is the same thing? She is black with a green irridescent undertone & a bit of Red in her neck.

Very likely, but no guarantee. Where did you get it from?

I bought my hens from Life is good Farm in Ellabell GA - I think they were down-sizing a bit.

Also, what is a sex-linked??
