I didn't mean for that to come out as harsh as they may be taken... What can you expect from a 25 year military vet. I only know how to "Tell it like it is". Sometimes to a fault...my apologies!

DH used to have game roosters when we got married 18 yrs ago. I was so hoping to repurpose a lot of his pens and such but about 6 -7 yrs ago he pushed them all over & into a ditch at the farm.
I had him down there with me digging around one day.....we found some possible usable bits and pieces. He has fussed and told me just to go buy some instead of digging in weeds and such for wood

I live in the Upstate

Spartanburg actually. It has been a few years since I was in Cola last........

My best friend lives in Laurens and her dad live in Newberry. I try to go see her for a weekend every 3-4 months. Not gotten to in awhile though, so she has been coming up here

We both have been so busy - her with new grandbaby and me with chickens, it is hard to get together much nowadays. I think last time I saw her was when I went down in Feb.

I wish I could drive to Cola to the state farmer's market!

Though I use separate bins for my meal worm raising...many successful "Mealieworm Farmers" are using the 3-bin method. Most of those cheap plastic 3-bin combos are hardly air tight. Besides that, refrain from using fruit as your moisture source...I use carrot and celery sticks and my 6000+ mealworms are thriving perfectly! When's the last time you've ever seen a raw carrot or celery stick get moldy...you can let one sit out for a week and the most that your going to observe is that it got "limp"!

I use to think giving Yogurt to the chickens was a feeding frenzy...wait till you offer up live mealworms! They put a Shark feeding frenzy to shame!

HEY! I Love those drawers. Of course for crafting/studio stuff ....... not chicken stuff! Other than WalMart, you can sometimes find them at Fred's or Dollar General stores

Besides, I grab mealworms for the chickens when we move a roll of hay in for the horses & goats

Mine grow naturally LOL
Fun is feeding them to 6 week old chicks. OMGGGGG at the games they play.........'chase', 'keep away', 'tag', 'tug of war'........ I think I managed to video some silkie chicks with them......... was sooooooooo funny.......not sure if I still have that video or not though.

They're doing great mary! Pretty sure I've got 3 roos and 1 pullet out of the ones I got from you. I'm not sure about the 5 I hatched though. So far only one of them appears to be a roo, but they're still too young.

I love them all though!

Not for me...it looks like the same photo maybe lightened up some...a closer pic of the chick in question would help me some. The only thing I see on the darker chick in the foreground is a fairly large comb, but I've learned that with some breeds, the size of comb means nothing while they're this young. Some folks have told me they've had hens they were ready to "cull" cause they thought they were roosters, but didn't have the heart to do it. Lo and behold after 18 weeks or so, the darn thing laid an egg! The he was a she! What breed of chicken is it, or is that unknown as well? When I first got my chicks they all were bumping their chest and throwing there legs are each other like they had spurs...heck I thought I had nothing but roosters. Turns out I have 16 hens and 4 roosters, but I have Barred Rocks, Production Reds, Buff Orphingtons, Golden Comets, Buff Cochin, and gosh knows what else from what I call the "mystery mixed pullet" bins at Tractor Supply Center.

Bottomline, is that it's hard to tell sometimes especially if that bird is the only one of that breed that you have in your flock. It's was even tougher when I was in absolute "amateur" status...now, along with the help of the seasoned experts here on BYC, I'm beginning to get a clue. Hang, in there and give it time...you can't even be 100% sure it's a roo if it crows, cause if you read some threads here on BYC, folks will tell you that they have hens that crow, hens that have large combs, hens that have spurs, hens that are dominant and fight the others, etc... I look now look for several roo characteristics like shiny, pointed hackles on the neck, thicker legs, a large comb in combination with these other signs, standing more upright, etc... I didn't plan on keeping any roosters, but now may try to keep two unless I find they create problems with the neighbor(s). If I have to get rid of them I will give them away to "rehome" or satisfy the Chik-fil-a Cows! Sorry I can't be more help...

It's easy, but those beetles do escape occasionally. We scoop them up and put them back in the box but it can be kind of embarrassing if you have visitors and the beetles start to walk across the floor.

Hey everybody - I thought I'd give you all an update on my "black-star" search. If you remember I was asking about a specific breed, not sex-links. Well, I got myself one of the little cockerals today (as a surprise gift from my friend) and I knew immediately what breed it is. They are La Fleche!!!
lol.png
I have no idea why they call them black stars but they are very pretty birds. I'm getting some hatching eggs soon so hopefully I will have this breed to share someday in the future. I have some pics of my little guy but I haven't quite figured out how to put them on here.
