Thanks! I'm going to have to force myself to rehome them

If i had room I'd keep them all. One in particular has stolen my heart..he has a little crooked beak and is fearless..I'll have to post a pic of him. His little beak is soo funny. It doesn't stop him from scarfing down the food though!

The roos are nice looking.

I was able to rehome several that I raised last year. They were just to nice to eat. I advertised on CL and one of the farm ad websites. A couple in Michigan drove 800+ miles to pick up 2 blue roos and 1 black plus some chicks that I hatched.

This year, I have 25-30 roos. I am going to put the roos in the freezer while they are fryer size. I have hatched 80-100 chicks this year.
I lost count.

Glad I don't hatch as many as Amy/Nadine.

They are nice looking aren't they??? I have you & your beautiful birds to thank for that!

I love them so much and wish I could keep them all! Out of curiousity, when are they considered fryer size? I dont think I'll be putting any of these in the freezer this year...but will probably need to know this for future reference.

Someone decided that, uhm, buff brahmas are for, uhm playing with, and I found an expired chicken when I got home. BAD MIDAS!!!! I've introduced him to the babies, but he's grounded in his crate while we're at work now b/c I don't trust him. Once we get him altered I've researched that the 'playing' goes down and the guarding goes up. I hate that a chicken had to experience this first hand though. So, with that said, I'm going to need at least another brahma if they aren't all spoken for...

Amy here are the babies!

I suffered my first casualty yesterday by the paws and teeth of my Jack Russell Terrier. They've been doing fine for weeks "under my supervision," and my wife and I were just complimenting the dogs for how well they were getting along together. The worst we saw was a couple sniffs of the chickens tail...well, my female JRT circled around the back of my workshop out of my view when I hurt a sudden and brief commotion...yep, a one month old barred rock hen in her mouth. I never kicked that dog in my life until that moment...now she's in the dog house!

Even though she knows she done wrong and appears to regret her actions...I don't think I can ever trust those dogs again around the chickens...when something snaps in them, it's all over! I felt so bad... I tried to revive the hen to no avail. No blood at all, I assume she either had her neck broken or was scared to death. I never thought I could feel so dang bad about losing a chicken...but it sure seems different when you bring them up from day 1.

The very first batch of chickens I started with - 10 beautiful buff orpingtons- were all done away with by our miniature pinscher when they were 5 months old. I thought I could trust her after 5 months. And the chickens were in a pen! It was a hard lesson to learn about predator proofing. Took me a year to get over it before I got more chickens, and the miniature pinscher found a new home

Taking a break from the garden..found a bunch of cutworms so I called the flock over..they were so excited..I would scratch them up and they would gobble them down...I came in to get a drink and they went to take a dirt bath and siesta in front of the fan

Figure I will go back out once it cools off a tad. Never knew chickens could be such company.

Planning on doing a complete coop cleanout Saturday, replacing all the bedding, hosing and scrubbing everything down. . . what do ya'll clean with? Just bleach water or something else? I'll pre-wipe the surfaces before I use any bleach, if that's what I end up using. . . I just wasn't sure if there was something else that was better. DH swears he has a respirator somewhere. . . that's what worries me. . . it's buried somewhere and no telling how old it is. I am going to try to get him to find it tonight so I can make sure it's in decent shape and get filters for it tomorrow. So who wants to come get the free fertilizer when we're done? Y'all know you all need some more chicken poop!
