I bought a Mister last year from Home Depot for $10 and I broke that out and put up a cover for one area and have the mister under it, keeps them much cooler all the birds huddle under the mister doesn't seem to use a lot of water but its at least 10 degrees cooler where its at than anywhere else.

This heat is miserable

I was filling pools yesterday and the ducks came up for a spray and seemed to enjoy it so much I just started hosing down the coops. The chickens did not appreciate the spray from the hose but they did seem cooler hanging around inside the coop. I hosed down the nest boxes (made of metal) and the plywood wall and concrete blocks along the wall. Poor girls that are broody are just miserable except for the duck and hen on the floor of the duck coop.

Some days when I fill up the pool I can't stand it and wind up taking off my socks and shoes and jumping in. I wind up having to change out of very wet shorts but the shirt is already soaked from sweat anyhow so I just enjoy the cool while I can. I feel like that old commercial where you take the Nestea plunge!

I love that cold water from the well!

Hello Donna and welcome to BYC!

We are neighbors for sure. I'm just off of Hwy 101 at I-85 (between 101 and Abner Creek Rd). I started with 12 chicks six years ago and I've gone a little crazy. Now I have ducks, peafowl, pheasants, guineas, standard and bantam breed chickens, goats etc. etc. I have 21 acres and I'm trying to fill every square inch of it.

Did you shop at the winter Farmers Market on Sharon Rd (Sharon Rose Farms)? If so, I've probably met you already as I sold eggs there for 2 years now. Anyway, welcome to the wonderful world of chickens. Let me know if I can help you at all. Also meant to say we LOVE pictures, so feel free to share!

I have a baby pheasant!!

I'm so excited, my Lady Amherst hen sat on eggs last year but the male wasn't mature so no babies. This is her first nest and I only see one little chick but I'm thrilled to see that little yellow fuzz ball. Now keeping my fingers crossed that she will be able to keep it safe and raise it up. The fence they're in is not meant for little chicks and it can walk right through. She seems to be keeping it very close right now. To say I''m excited is an understatement.

Oh yeah, we also have LOTS more baby mallard ducklings. Oh my gosh, what am I going to do with them all? I still have 2 ducks on eggs and yesterday I found another black sexlink sitting on muscovy eggs. That makes THREE black sexlink hens that have been broody this year at my house. Anybody need ducklings?

I have a Runner duck on eggs in the front pasture and my bush hog guy is coming tomorrow. I will show him where the nest is and flag it but the noise will probably scare Cimido to death. Runners are not brave ducks.
I had a Khaki Campbell try to go broody on a nest in the back yard but I gathered all the eggs up and made her go back with the flock. She was out at 11:30 the other night quacking away and I had to pick her up and take her to the coop in my night gown and slippers. There were chicken eggs and duck eggs all in the nest and they were in all stages of development. I found it because a BO hen laid there and then announced it. Then Adonis joined in so I went to see what they were carrying on about and found it.

What is it with all the broody ducks lately? Mine aren't supposed to go broody. Someone forgot to tell them! Mallards I understand but not Runners! And I didn't think Campbells either!

Joy, I'm at Bennett's Bridge. Bennett's Bridge Road almost runs into my driveway at Hwy. 296/Reidville Rd. I'm not even familiar with the Farmers Market at Sharon Rose Farms, you'll have to fill me in. That's neat about your baby pheasant.

Pink, I grew up between Woodruff and Enoree and still go to church there at Antioch Baptist on Hwy. 221. I'll ask my dad about bees, he places his at different places but I don't know how strong his hives are this year. He might also know of someone else in the area.
