In my experience I can not slip chicks under a Marans and have her accept it. Set up a brooder and take one of the babies from her and give your lonely one a pal. Otherwise you will never hear the end of it.
I no longer let anyone into my brooder room and soon may not allow tours around the pens. I get more and more visitors that will not control their children. And the other day actually had a grown man that was worse than any kid. He didn't seem mentally challenged but I began to wonder. They will not be allowed on my property again. I do not tolerate such rude and inconsiderate behavior. And then to be such novices (though one tried to tell me he had been big in chickens for many years.

) they had the gall to tell me I didn't know my breeds when I have raised and researched them. I was steaming, I assure you.

So sorry to hear that! I am no where near as experienced as you are but we had 200 people at our house for a big party for Memorial Day. I locked my run (thank god) and asked all the moms to let me know when their kids wanted to go see the chickens. Not even 5 minutes after I tell them all, kids are making a bee line for the run, SHAKING THE FENCING, and yelling at my brand new girls. And the moms just look at me with a bland look. So I put my great pyr in the backyard and that solved that issue. I'm 26 years old, and when I was young, I would not have dared try those things at other people's houses.

And for people to tell you that you don't know what you're doing, I'd ask them to leave on the spot. You invited them to your home and if they're going to be rude, they can take it elsewhere. I know lots of people won't let strangers on their chicken's property for biosecurity reasons. Maybe that's a good rule to prevent a@@holes from coming to see you too!!!!

Hugs*

gary ramey is the man i am getting my ameruacanas from. gary has bred these for the last 45 yrs. but gary is getting old and last yr. he went blind in one eye. he really knows his ameruacanas and arcaunas. i am lucky to have found his birds. he cant see to drive to the shows anymore.

That's awful, Amy! I can assure you, if I brought my kids with me, they would NOT wreak havoc at your place. They are very good girls; besides, I don't put up with my children acting like heathens. But I wouldn't necessarily have to bring them either.

Hmmm. So I got the brooder in the house and all set up and the lone chick was in there for a while. I took it back out to the coop a few minutes ago to see what the hen would do, and she pecked ME, thinking I had one of HER babies (which I did), so I put it down in the broody box and she let it go under her with no problem. I stayed out there for a few minutes and watched and she seemed ok with it. Maybe it just had to fluff up all the way and start running around for her to think it wasn't an interloper. I'm keeping the brooder set up just in case. I'd much rather she do the work of raising it instead of me!

Yep! They are great for snacks and for salads! I even used them to make some deviled eggs last week and because they are bite sized they were gone before I could blink an eye. One of the ladies that buy eggs from me get a dozen of the bantam eggs because she has 3 little kids who will eat them, but not the big ones.

Bantam eggs- kid friendly, fun, travel size

My boys are farm boys.... They no not to chase goats, never walk behind a horse, Ask b4 petting a strangers dog, and always check your shoes b4 entering the house. That being said, my 5 yr old is wonderfull at rounding up chickens. And if they were to hurt a chicken, I might have to hurt them. JK-

They are awesome! You will love them! Gary always has the best birds. I posted on here not long ago that he had them for sale. I sure wish I had checked with him when I went down to Columbia to the show a few weeks ago. I had a van so I could have brought them all home but alas, I am growing up 3 bloodlines right now of blues, blacks, splits and lavenders. I am out of room for breeding more.

Hey, Kimberly! Think I should have been able to put all those birds in that nice van? Your rabbits enjoyed the cool ride! But all those Ameraucanas would have been awesome, too. It was a nice new 2011 Chrysler with lots of bells and whistles. I took Kimberly and Nicole on a little trip in it. We might not can afford to own one but it is nice to joy ride in a nice new vehicle on occasion.

It wasn't even kids that upset me this time it was grown men!

Well, the first thing they did out of the car was ask to use the restroom. Made me a bit suspicious since they live local and called me right before leaving their house and got here within minutes so I was a bit peeved. I would not allow it. I do not have a public restroom here and my neighbor, the cop, said it was very bad to let strangers come into my house all the time.

Then one of the guys kept wandering off and kept going into the pens without asking if he could. I had to tell him to stop going in because strangers scare the birds. But every time my back was turned he was in another pen looking at the chickens and trying to catch them. I told them repeatedly that the ones in certain pens were not for sale but they were ignoring me.
Then they told me Albert was not a very good black copper roo and did not fit the standard. I had to laugh in his face and let him know that the standard is written by a bunch of people that breed for looks not for production. Not to mention it isn't in the standard yet. I breed what I like. They showed me a photo of their black copper Marans rooster and it was a Wheaten!!! I told them that and pointed out what made it a wheaten and he told me I did not know what I was talking about. He said Bev Davis sold these and they were show quality. Again, I had to laugh. Marans are yet to be accepted. I could show my Mille Fleur Cochins but that means nothing. They are not accepted yet either!

They came for one breed but once here wanted all kinds of different ones and all the ones they liked were my mix breeds. The red colored Delaware/RIR girls and the Langshans/JG girls. Though you have to admit, those big black girls are awesome.

Thank goodness I had the presence of mind to lock the brooder room. I have been doing that when strangers come just in case they bring children that do not respect a latched door.

I swear even the worse kids were not as bad as these "cultured" men. Most children are fairly good and do not understand they should not handle the chicks too roughly. I try to teach a bit but I haven't the patience for it.

Oh! I so hope she takes it back. She should know it because it was peeping in the shell. I just haven't had as good of luck with my Marans being mamas. Now the Silkies, omg, they would take a baby dinosaur to raise if I asked them to!
