This hatching has made me rethink my "no silkies" stance. I may just relent and get a couple in case this happens again.

We went out to eat tonight, and before we left I double and triple checked on the chicks. Seems mama Marans has accepted the late hatcher back, but I noticed one of the little black and white ones wasn't looking too good and seemed lethargic. Sure enough, when we got home, it was flopped over and cold. It gave its last couple of agonal breaths as I was walking in the door with it. Oh well. My girls cried, especially my 8 year old. She understands there was probably something wrong with it internally and there was nothing we could do, but it doesn't make her any less sad.

She got my animal-crazy genes for sure.

ETA: Mine sneeze every time I fill the feeder in the coop. They all crowd around and shove their heads in (we feed crumbles) and get food up their nares, then its that little squeaky "Choo! Choo! Choo!" for a minute or two from a few of them.

They are awesome! You will love them! Gary always has the best birds. I posted on here not long ago that he had them for sale. I sure wish I had checked with him when I went down to Columbia to the show a few weeks ago. I had a van so I could have brought them all home but alas, I am growing up 3 bloodlines right now of blues, blacks, splits and lavenders. I am out of room for breeding more.

Hey, Kimberly! Think I should have been able to put all those birds in that nice van? Your rabbits enjoyed the cool ride! But all those Ameraucanas would have been awesome, too. It was a nice new 2011 Chrysler with lots of bells and whistles. I took Kimberly and Nicole on a little trip in it. We might not can afford to own one but it is nice to joy ride in a nice new vehicle on occasion.

Amy, that van could have been loaded down with chickens!

It was soooooooooo nice, and I have not been a minivan mom since Nicole was 6-7 yrs old!

Wish me luck guys. I'm taking my year old jack Russell to the hospital today to see if his training has paid off. He's having his therapy dog test today. If he passes the two of us will be able to visit patients a few times a month. I'm so excited. He should ace everything but the part where they pull out a brush! He hates grooming!

I have no clue the difference between BCM & Wheaten. Never saw a wheaten.

I think he just wanted some "known lines" at a good price. If he wanted more of what was in the picture, he should get them from that breeder. When he got the roo, did he not keep a record of what it was, age, date he got it, etc etc? (OK even I have gotten slack on my record keeping

). I think he would have been told to leave right then, because obviously being so argumentative he did not want to work to improve the breed nor help get it approved.

And asking to use the bathroom? I would have pointed him to the trees.

Sounds suspicious alright. Nosy people.

Coming for a certain breed then wanting my mixed layers would have gotten him told that the only thing I had for sale was what he came to look at. And if he wanted mutt chickens I would consider parting with a rooster but that is it

I try not to touch other people's birds. I don't like people handling mine a lot. If the birds are too young, it is way stressful on them, IMO. For sale ones (none yet lol) will be placed in a pen & sold from the farm or a swap or my drive. No one going around back. Too protective of my silkies to let people poke around them.

DH has a friend that has sheep, goats, chickens, ducks, pigs......he said sometimes people stop on the side of the road, get out of the car, and walk into their yard and mess with animals. Mostly petting or feeding them unknown food.

One man stopped with his kids and one kid had opened the sheep or goat pen (can't remember) and went in with the animals!

And you can tell the pens go with his house......they aren't that far apart except for the pigs & some of the sheep.
They have about 8 acres I think, and it is not fenced, but they have separate pens for the animals. He did have no trespassing signs up. His wife said it did not stop anything though. The people he has caught in his yard act like they are doing nothing wrong!

I told him, I would yell at them then shoot in the air. It would stop one way or another.

I do not care if I ever make money from my birds, however I will let it be known up front that the buyer is not doing me any favors by buying from me instead of someone else. No respect for me or my property, then hit the road.

Yepp, now I see why everyone thinks I am mean

Wasn't it a few months ago that it was suggested to add Marans to the SOP? Seems there was a huge showing like with the lavender silkies last fall. I think they have it written, but waiting for approval. And as far as I know the only color submitted for approval is black copper. Until the approval is actually given, it is not in the standards at all. He needs to learn a little more before trying to go all high and mighty

SOP for Marans is a thread on BYC- you can scroll for color requirements for the black copper.

I would have directed his *$$ to Marans Club of America, too!

edited because I cannot spell pigs today

Heck I have to round up my two roos I put in with my layers. The girls are easy to put up. Just walk through the yard & they come running and follow. Throw a little feed or treats in the pen & they run all over each other to get in.
Boys are a pain to get in. Usually involving me chasing them around.

Nicole has 6 ducks in her free range flock right now. I let them out in mornings, she goes out in evenings and says go up ducks and walks behind them and they go right in sometimes. Other times they run around in circles quacking.....and Nicole chases them. I think they are playing with her because if she don't chase they stop and stand still and look at her & quack.

They are in and out of the pen all day if I leave the door open so they do know where to go - they just like her chasing them sometimes
