I'm nearby too, just a little farther south toward Woodruff than Joy, on Reidville Rd. I'm also a new to this board and a new chicken mom. We just have two pets adopted from a K5 hatching, a Amber link cockeral (I think) and a Black Star pullet that are 10 weeks old.

Did you make it through the Wednesday evening storm OK? I heard that there was alot of damage up that way too.

Maybe that's why the hawks haven't been much of a bother here. I have Blue Jays like crazy. They love the cat food, they come right up on the front porch to eat everyday. Of course, my chickens have found the cat food too and we have to close the gate now to let the poor cat eat or else the chickens chase him off.

Ummmm.....I wouldn't be just trying to scare it off. If it kills my chickens, it has to go. A hawk is like any other predator, it will keep coming back until the food supply is gone. Only then will it move on.

I guess I am lucky in a way because the neighbor seems to be gun happy. He shoots all the hawks he can. Worries me with such a gun happy neighbor but so far he shoots a shot gun up and not directly towards my property. He says he is helping to keep my chickens safe but he really has bird feeders and the hawks get the song birds so he uses the livestock excuse in case he gets questioned. I think you are still supposed to get a license to shoot them if they are after your livestock and we have a Game Warden down the road from us.

But he also keeps odd hours and is out and about during the night. He looks for foxes and coyotes that roam. And 2 legged varmints that may be up to no good.

I see hawks all the time here. They are such beautiful creatures but I can't have them getting my chicks or chickens either. And poor Jolie has to sleep some time! I find feathers and am puzzled by what might have happened but one can only do so much. And with young roos now out free ranging I know they are good prospects for critters. I see them all over the new duck pens and into the back yard so they roam quite a ways during the day.

Everyone stay cool today! I had heard it was going to hit 100 but looking at the NOAA website it is saying only 96. Still and all, that is horrid and the humidity will make it feel 100 or more. I thought I was going to melt yesterday afternoon while filling pools and checking the water containers.
I do not like getting up at 5:30 am but once the light is better outside I will be working like mad to fill all water and food containers and be back in the house by 9 am. Air quality will be nasty out there and my lungs can't take it. At noon when I go out to put ice in the waterers I will have a hard time of it. So I hope everyone can stay safe in this dangerous heat.

And Jackie! Thank you for the help last Sat. morning. You are a doll! You are welcome here anytime! And the price is right!

I agree about this heat. I am a SC native, but my heat tolerance the last couple of years is more like someone who is used to living in the northern climates! I keep hoping the rest of the summer will be better, or at least normal since June has been so brutal. At least our chicks are still inside. Because they are in a room that is upstairs and is much warmer, Lou Ann was able to keep the light off of them yesterday and they were quite happy. They are two weeks old today and starting to scratch around and throw pine shavings EVERYWHERE!
Nadine, how far are you from Greenville?

Oh, how I wish all mine could be inside! I do enjoy this AC! Too much!

I am not too far from Greenville. I grew up in Piedmont Park, which is near Paris Mtn State Park. Went to Paris and Sevier schools and church at Piedmont Park United Methodist. Gosh, that neighborhood has changed!
Now I live out in the middle of nowhere, or it used to be nowhere but has grown too much in the last 10 years to suit me. I am off of Hwy 14, north of Greer, past Tooter Town. And the other side of me is Hwy 357, near Holly Springs Baptist Church.

I was just out doing chores and saw a black cloud headed our way. Geez! Now the radar is showing a storm headed straight for us so I am off to Williams for grain and then I suppose I will have to put chicks back inside for a while. They so enjoy the green grass I like to put as many as I can out every day in little pens. Lots of work hauling them in and out but some are too nice to let free range.

Hope all you folks kept your roofs on. Quite a lot of wind, rain and hail in these past 2 weeks.
Figured my girls would be laying scrambled eggs!
They did fine tho.
Just came in for a break. Been weeding while the ground was wet and the sun wasn't strong.
Too many tomato plants. Just don't have the heart to throw them out. At least in the ground they will have a chance.

Now y'all know better than to talk about shooting birds of prey on a public forum. That is card table talk, not internet talk!

Had some friends riding bikes down in Maudlin and they got some great shots of the funnel cloud/ micro burst that touched down on Sunday. One of the guy's detached garage dissappeared into the woods!

Okay, the storm won't hit us but it gave some nice breezes this morning. I still have a bit of work left but had to take a breakfast break. Cereal for supper last night and it did not stick to my ribs. Other parts, yeah, but not enough to get me through til late morning.

I want to remind everyone again that it is illegal to shoot hawks without a special permit or license, whatever your county may call it. A concerned friend of ours that monitors this thread emailed to ask I let you all know that law enforcement may show up on your doorstep while patrolling our threads here on BYC. They are looking for offenders in all the poultry forums. I guess this is an easy way to catch folks but how they find you from here, I do not know. Maybe able to track back from your computer? Is it called an ISP trail?
Anywho, just wanted you all to be careful in case they are looking to fine anyone.

DH and I took a few photos yesterday of some birds I have for sale. I will be updating my For Sale page on my website in the next day or two.
Also, I had one of my Cayugas show up with 6 little ducklings this morning. Probably hers and the Rouens cross. They are black and a few have a tiny bit of yellow on them.

Oh! I also took a few shots of my blue Runner and her babies, which are all sold but will be here until next week.

However, do not mess with her babies or she will get you!

And on a sad note....my AC just went out! Or the central fan. I cut it off when I smelled burning wires. I have fans going like mad now but that won't keep us cool all day. I got on the phone immediately and called a repair service out. If it isn't one thing it is 20! Geez louise!!!
