Yup, Luann went and got her a permit to shoot them since they were taking out her chickens pretty regular. Game Warden did not even come to her house to see if she had chickens! They gave her a permit and she got rid of several in 30 days. Had to go back and get another one. Not sure if she is still getting them but there is an agriculture farm across the road from her and they think her birds are yummy snacks. Then she started having trouble with owls......and coyotes.

I know my other neighbor asked our Game Warden about getting rid of them and he said he would not do it but he advised him to get a permit if he had livestock getting killed by them. Since he only had song birds, too he didn't bother with it but told me about it.
I got a dog instead. I doubt I could hit a hawk and I hate the kick of a shot gun.

Alright, so I finally got the temperature to hold steady for a week now and got brave and put 13 eggs in the $10 still air incubator. There are RIR mixes and a few of my Mille Fleur d'uccle eggs in there. This is the official trial run.

Funny enough, the hatch day is July 4th - how is that for independence day?!!

Maybe that's why the hawks haven't been much of a bother here. I have Blue Jays like crazy. They love the cat food, they come right up on the front porch to eat everyday. Of course, my chickens have found the cat food too and we have to close the gate now to let the poor cat eat or else the chickens chase him off.

ive got jays too.. I need to make sure I have feed out for them and get them to stay close .. they are very aggressive birds and territorial.. good idea..

So hot in Sumter. 102. I like Cochins but...I think they are going to die in this weather! I put ice packs in a box in their coop. Hoping they will figure out they can lay next to them and get cool. It's miserable weather.

And sad news. I was just letting one of my seramas play in the coop and he got out somehow and my moms dog and one of mine ate him!!!!!!!!! Of all the chickens to eat??!!! A serama????!! Really???!!!

So I may not invest in bantam breeds because I have this inkling of a feeling I will see then escaping from the coop often and dead and me sad. The seramas live in the garage typically.

Got the AC going for now. Unfortunately they have to put in a new furnace because all the wires melted. The drain got stopped up and over flowed the water onto all the wires. If I had not been in the house and smelled it then the house would have caught fire. Lucky I knew enough to flip the breaker off when I finally found what what causing the smell. I could not get DH to wake up so if I had not been here he would have died in the fire.
It is only by passed now as a temporary fix until they can get the new one ordered and brought out in a few days. Going to cost me an arm and a leg but it has to be fixed. Of course, DH had a fit about it and I am sure he would have not had it fixed. Kinda like our well and the lawnmower. I have the power to fix this and by golly, it will be completely fixed. I may have to scream at the water and fuss about the tall grass but the AC is non negotiable at my age....and the Guinea Pigs have to be kept cool, too. Some of the chickens had to do without ice today because I was trying to keep the piggies cool while DD was at work.

Hope you all survived a very miserable hot day!
And I have friends that do not have air! They have big trees, open windows and fans. I can't do that anymore!

Off to check waters before dark. I did most of them and got in the pool after filling the ducks up. The Saxony actually were thinking of getting in while I was in there. Those are some cool ducks! No pun intended!
