Moonchild, is there a difference one can see from worm eggs and Cocci eggs? I know both are detected by the mass of eggs. Cocci parasites are a worm also, from what I understand, right? So how do you tell them apart? How good of a microscope does one need to detect the eggs? To what magnification?

here's a pic we took at work of coccidia: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/51428_n63700117211_2093675_6481988.jpg

I stole this from the internet but it's a roundworm...https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/51428_a0475480e10de621c53fed2c65638819.png

Cocci eggs are much smaller than other intestinal parasites.

L, Thank you so much for that example! It is very interesting to see the difference in the two--we are talking round worms right?

Coccidiosis is not a worm but it is a parasite. Cocci is very small and hard to detect without powerful magnification, though once you know what it is you can easily spot it in a fecal sample. Roundworms are much bigger and easy to see on just the 10X. Parasitology is fascinating! Sometimes gross but much more interesting than blood disorders or organ problems, to me anyhow.

Nadine, what power would you need to see cocci?

I can see them under 40x when I'm looking at a sample

Well, about 30 minutes ago my first keet emerged from the shell of my last hatch of the season(I hope). That is the last hatch of guinea keets. I still have some maran eggs scheduled to hatch Saturday and Peafowl eggs scheduled to hatch around the 28 of this month. I have 72 guinea eggs that candled good for this hatch. Might as well go out in style! I also have 5 silkie eggs hatching with them which I wish I had received a little earlier or later as I really do not want them in there with all those keets, but I just have to go with it now.

If anyone needs some keets I know where some are!

I used 40x and pretty sure it was round worm. But today she is alittle shakey on her feet. She doesn't look as good as yesterday! But still hangin in there and eating. I'm gonna do another sample tomorrow and see if the meds are even working. The store only had Pig Swig! Oh and I checked a sample of stool from the big coop and the small coop and they where negative. I just feel like it is something I'm missin. Cause last night she was just running around and eating and today just not right! Does anyone think I should do 3 days of Delta albaplex 3x? Urg arg!!!! Oh a question about Polish chickens.. Do they roost? Cause I think I just read somewhere silkies sleep on the ground?

Eye yie ie, I am mad at me some chickens right now!!! They used to be so good about going in for the night. Now I have to chase them for what seems to be an eternity. I tell ya what I'm doing tomorrow right after work, and that is to but some sort of fencing or net to contain them boogers. I have a few who stay in the pen all day and a few who want to stay out all night. Well there are five I couldn't catch. Maybe after a night out they will learn their lesson. Is it just a guy thing bc? They were all roo's!!

Moonchild, all my polish roost as high as they can get. A few with really big crests sleep on the ground but I think it is because they cannot see where the roost is located.

no matter how many you find homes for, for some reason 70 some odd keets seems to be your lucky number!

I really wish I only had 70 right now. That is only what is hatching in the bator, I have easily that again in the brooder. I did sell 20 today!
