Ummmmm.....NO! I know this has been answered already but felt the need to put in my 2 cents anyway. I cannot see how in the world someone could ship you a cross beaked bird and it be an HONEST mistake. I mean, it might be possible to overlook it in a chick for a while but when you have birds that you are shipping they should be examined and photographed. Also, there is no way that she can guarantee the gender of these 8 week old silkies. So either she is not honest or she doesn't know what she is doing. I'm sorry that this happened to you. I would insist that she send me another bird and she should pay the shipping. Unless you don't want anymore of her birds and then she should refund your money for that bird. This was not your mistake and it wasn't the mistake of the postal service, this one is all hers and she needs to do the right thing. You could also point out that you're doing her a favor by keeping the cross beaked bird as you won't be able to sell it or breed it.

I sent the lady an e-mail today. I'll give her a day or two to respond. The more I think about it, the more I'm beginning to wonder if I want another one. Maybe trying to get money back is the best option.

I think Blueberry Hill said last week they have seen a bear recently, too. Since she seems to live pretty close to you, it could very well be a relative! I would appreciate it if you two would keep them up towards the mountain a little bit and away from my house. I'm only about 4 miles from the state park, but like to think the bears are keeping their distance from here.

We have lots of bears up here in Pickens. A guy DH knows leased some land across the street from us to hunt on last yr and said all he ever saw were bears. But that's nothing compared to the rumored mountain lions that have been spotted by multiple people apparently only a couple miles away. I had a neighbor come warn me about them because of our mini donks..she said one killed her neighbors whole herd of goats. Gotta love living near the mountains...anyways here's a pic of a visitor on my friends porch last weekend:

They had grilled steaks the night before..guess mr or ms. bear got hungry! It actually opened up the drawer on the grill.

time to baton down the hatches and make stuff bear proof.. My son saw a black puma type cat, here in laurens some people told him he was making it up except for the animal control officer, who said that we do have at least 2 here , he'd seen one too. they didnt want everyone to know for panic type thing so they never announced that they were here.. I understand what he was saying some
ya-hoo would go out and hunt it down and cause more damage than good ..

My beautiful partridge Silkie hen Natasha rudely started crowing a few months ago. We considered a name change to Nikolai or something like that but she remains Natasha. Honestly, she doesn't even know we're talking about her so why change?

I'm sure you'd rather have a Joan than a Jett!

Yes, we have a lot of bears here. There was one crossing I-85 not far from where Joy lives and it was hit by a truck. I think it lived and they hauled it off but could be wrong. That one might have gotten killed. We hear about so many getting hit by cars. I have never seen one here but my neighbors are always telling me they see bears, wolves and panthers that I never see. Turkeys, deer and other wildlife I see quite often here on the farm and when taking DD to school. But none of those other scary creatures. Praise be!

I think that is very wise, Nikki! I would not want another either and getting your money back would be the best.
And I am with the others on the age thing, she can't possibly know the gender at that age. There have been many long time breeders that get stumped and I know I certainly have a hard time telling on Silkies. There are a few tricks but only they work on the poor quality Silkies. The better the quality, the harder they are to sex until over 6 months old. They either crow or lay an egg!
This woman sounds like a menace to our chicken society. Not a good idea to deal with her anymore.

Isn't it great to have everyone's support from here on our SC thread?

Amy,

I don't have any I want to get rid of, but there are plenty around. Tell him to check Craig's list, or go to the Market Bulletin www.sc.gov then under departments, go to agriculture, then under news, the market bulletin, then you can look at the archived copies free (any other than the current one). I don't know anyone that I could personally vouch for that is getting rid of any of their layers, sorry. Hope this helps him some. It's always scary to get birds from someone you don't know though.

Deb

Thank you, I will let him know. He actually contacted me because he saw my website. I get the most emails from it! Photos say so much to people and they feel like they get to know my birds and farm from them. CL and the Market Bulletin can be kinda iffy.
