Can't believe a bear is right there with your chickens! There's been quite a few bears recently around Greenville. Yikes!

Guess what's happening on my farm today? I'm getting all my chicken coops battened down. Don't know the correct term but they are securing them all to the ground. He said that unless it turns "Wizard of Oz" out there, they aren't going anywhere! All eight coops and my garden shed. It sure wasn't cheap but it's better than buying a new one and definitely takes some worry off me! I'm happy!

That sounds great, Susanne! It certainly helps to have them tied down but 23 years ago when a "wind shear" (felt like a tornado to me) came through our place and knocked my single wide mobile home over, with me in it, the winds were strong enough to just pull the tie downs up with it. However, the reason it did so was because the one we were living in at the time was built for Hurricane force winds so it could not demolish it like it did my barn and many other mobile homes around me.
You won't have sheds and coops go blowing out into the pond anymore and you won't have to worry about chickens getting moved into the next county. I think the tie downs is a great idea and you will sleep much better because of it!

A gentleman just emailed me asking for Barred Rocks or possibly some other layers for his soon to be backyard flock. He is in the Charleston area. Is there anyone on here that may be able to help him out?
I did not know if we have anyone right in the Charleston area that was raising chickens or even just had any for sale but maybe in the Columbia area? Or in between?
If he was willing to drive to the upstate then maybe anyone in our SC area that has something to help him start out would be great.

I did invite him to join BYC and our thread. Hopefully he will join us here but if not, let me know if anyone has something available and I will pass it along to him.

Thank you, friends and enablers!

Ummmmm.....NO! I know this has been answered already but felt the need to put in my 2 cents anyway. I cannot see how in the world someone could ship you a cross beaked bird and it be an HONEST mistake. I mean, it might be possible to overlook it in a chick for a while but when you have birds that you are shipping they should be examined and photographed. Also, there is no way that she can guarantee the gender of these 8 week old silkies. So either she is not honest or she doesn't know what she is doing. I'm sorry that this happened to you. I would insist that she send me another bird and she should pay the shipping. Unless you don't want anymore of her birds and then she should refund your money for that bird. This was not your mistake and it wasn't the mistake of the postal service, this one is all hers and she needs to do the right thing. You could also point out that you're doing her a favor by keeping the cross beaked bird as you won't be able to sell it or breed it.

Oh my gosh Jackie!! That is VERY SCARY!! Bears are not cute, they are dangerous. We had one in our area last year and it freaked me out. I started carrying pepper spray with me and should have taken the gun with me after dark. My Dad was just telling me yesterday about his friend who lives up 101 in Blue Ridge and was showing pictures of "his" bear yesterday. He had a huge bear in his backyard (it was filmed on a game camera for hours) and it tore the screen out of his screened in porch trying to get in his house. The bear had actually sat down in front of the game camera for a while until he got bored with it and then he just knocked the whole thing over. The scary thing is that they have a path cut thru the woods to his neighbors house so the neighbors children (5 and 6 years old) could run back and forth between the yards. They'd been playing out there the day before by themselves. They've set traps to try and catch it so it can be relocated. Have you considered calling to have a trap set in your yard?

Nikki, no I do not think you should pay for the shipping either! It was not your mistake and the person that sold them to you stated she made a mistake. It is also a bummer that she is showing up with crossed beaks in her birds. I have some beautiful silver polish I hatched this summer -- people said they culled heavy on these bird and they have the best! Well I hatched a bunch of chicks with these birds so I know it was not an incubation issue but the hen and rooster I hatched from their eggs both have crossed beak issues. They have beautiful markings though!

Do try to get her to pay. She has admitted it was her mistake! Good luck~

On another note, those guinea eggs I pulled from the deserted nest gave me 17 keet so far. I still see movement in 2 more--not sure how that will go as I have not been turning them but they may have been far enough along. I have 2 polish eggs in the bator from this years girls and they have developed veins--yes, I know to early to candle and I usually do not candle this early but they have veins and I could even see movement--I love white eggs! Problem is I do not need more chicks right now! Anyone want a couple polish if they hatch? How about some guinea keets!!

Amy,

I don't have any I want to get rid of, but there are plenty around. Tell him to check Craig's list, or go to the Market Bulletin www.sc.gov then under departments, go to agriculture, then under news, the market bulletin, then you can look at the archived copies free (any other than the current one). I don't know anyone that I could personally vouch for that is getting rid of any of their layers, sorry. Hope this helps him some. It's always scary to get birds from someone you don't know though.
