South Carolina

I like the rain to fill the well back up, although I guess it isn't ever down. We bored it during the bad drought of '86 and it is the big one not the little hole ones. If the power goes out we can still drop a bucket down to retrieve water but I keep a lot stored in jugs all over the house and barn for emergencies.

Since our lawnmower didn't want to run this summer very much I am almost glad it was dry. Though I had to feed the horse through the summer this year I didn't mind that as much as if the grass had gotten too bad. It is still tall in some places I wish it wasn't, I usually leave it tall in other places to allow for shade and cover for the chickens and ducks. The tall grass does allow for many more bugs for chickens and ducks and some wild birds that I would not normally see like the Blue Grosbeak. I do fill bad that I never put out my Hummingbird feeders this year and they only had the plants to come get nectar from. I was just really too busy and my DD and DH are not as outdoorsy as I am.

So now that I am dried off from morning stuff I need to get back to work. I spent a lot of yesterday adding new photos to my website and doing more work to it. I have several pages I need to get added but DH is the one that knows how to get that done. I am computer illiterate.

Well, I am done with feeding for the morning. I found another case of fowl pox last night and held my breath until I looked at everyone this morning. Still just the two. Both are polish roosters--I no longer think the silkie rooster had pox unless they were a very light case--the silver laced polish rooster that showed the signs first is looking really bad these days. He still eats good--this morning he got his own boiled egg and a handful of raspberries. The pox gets worse before it gets better--at least with him. The other bird that has it is my beautiful gold laced polish rooster--he only has sore at the moment on one side of his face--and I assume that will change. He is in with my buff laced polish rooster so I will see how long it will take for that one to get it. Both roosters are pretty aggressive so they are just going to have to stay together. I had moved them out of the hen pen when the cocci hit because they were to rough on the sick girls. I have not put them back for that reason. There pen is next to my OEGBs so I guess I will test those inoculations that those birds are suppose to have....

Hey, on another note~~~we have a family member that feeds "day old" bread to his chickens--probably 50% of their food in take is this bread. Does anyone else feed bread in this quantity. Is it ok for them? I thought of getting some "day old" bread for our hogs but I have never fed much bread to my chickens....

Good morning all:D Woke up to rain this morning to rain. It was wonderful. Threw my old feed clothes on and ran out to feed. I went to the duck pen to feed and refresh their water. Well their little pool is on a small hil. I was enjoying the rain so much and was not paying attention when I stepped in a big pile of duck poop and slid down that small hill on my butt. The ducks are quaking, we all know they are laughing , then daisy my older duck jumped on my lap and curled up next to me. Where eles can you go with poop all over you and still feel that life is good. Thank you God and also Daisy. Life is good on the farm.

My lung and chest doctor gives me a script for prednisone every year since I started having those wierd swelling instances. Some mornings I will wake up with my uvula (sp), that dangling thing in the back of my throat, swollen double or more in size. One prednisone will stop it and relieve the swelling. I'm allergic to antihistamines and believe me the doctors didn't believe it and tried every one available. Of course I swelled, itched and broke out in hives with every single one until I finally said no more, I know what it is even if you don't. So I don't take them anymore. I don't usually need the prednisone more than once or twice a year now. I see the chiropractor regularly and that has really helped my health.

as someone who has battled COPD and severe chronic asthma, and taken a LOT of prednisone, please be careful with that stuff. I had to have cataract surgery in my 40's due to prednisone, and have had serious dental issues. Finally got to th point where I can better control my environment and have managed to stay off the stuff for the past 3 years.

Yep, it is bad stuff. I've never been on it more than a week or so at a time. And for allergic swelling only a day or so at a time. Thankfully haven't needed it for the past several years at all. The few times I had to use it, I cut my dosage in half because it makes me feel so bad. Insomnia, heart palpatations, anger issues and hunger. I gained 5 pounds a week taking that stuff.

Ok, here are my 2 black copper marans. I think they are pullets--what do you guys think? I was thinking cockerels when they were younger but now I have changed my mind--please say you agree!!!

They are just starting to get color in their neck feathers and they really are sweet birds. Much friendlier than the silkies that are in with them.
