They often fail to thrive, have leg problems or joint problems and often get to the point of not being able to walk at all. If I put roosters out to free range and mature then they are able to get to the layer food and eat enough that they do not take in enough of the higher protein foods I offer early morning or late evening in their own coops. If they choose to get into another coop and sleep at night then they don't get any of the higher protein food and really go down hill. This blk copper roo we just put down decided to live with the ducks and chicks in their pen and coop and was unable to get enough of the higher protein starter.
My cuckoo Marans have been much tougher and never had these problems but the blk copper, blue copper and the wheatons I had all need a higher protein food to mature well.

I feed starter from Williams to my birds in the free range flock and breeder pens mixed with layer mash, wheat, BOSS and anything else they may desire at that time. Barley is good during cold months. I have some breeder birds that will be 5 next spring and still laying well. I just lost my exceptional white bantam Cochin hen this past summer. She was a show bird at one time in her young life but lived to be 8 years old. I have no idea how she was fed the first year of her life but know she hated pellets.

That's so weird. I had my Marans on Chick Starter for a few months and then Layer Feed. They're all fine. I've never had any problems at all. I wonder why.

i have never had problems like that either.

2 partridge silkie chicks
1 buff silkie chick
1 buff showgirl chick

All straight run
All 2-3 weeks old
Silkies are $5 each
Showgirl is $15 each
All came from show quality parents, too early to tell quality. I think the silkies color is wrong for SQ (per the breeder) but their type is nice so far.

Pickup Saturday late afternoon at Amy's only

sam..
I read somewhere that sweet peas were bad for them and since im not sure if they mean green peas which to me are sweet or the flower sweet peas ( but why would you feed them a flower???) anyway I've just never taken the chance.. maybe worming them all will help.. ?? who knows its just crazy.. and frustrating.. of course I have to hear it from my husband how they are not equaling the feed Im feeding them yada yada... yghhh... did you keep any of the EEs from the sale? or did your mom get them all.. are they laying?

Pink

I kept the two smallest and I have yet to see an egg and the lady from clemson said the wheatons are Americanas!!....We met the breeder also and my mom bought a roo...I can find nothing about them to say they are not Americana but I am waiting on eggs...my dark gal on the otherhand I know is an EE...still hoping for a blue egg!! I hope worming helps you,you should be covered in eggs with your group!! Green peas have had no ill effects on my ladies but now you have me ready to research ASAP!! I have my fingers crossed for you and sending prayers your way!!

Americauna and Ameraucua's are different the spelling witht i .. is how the hatcheries get away with selling them under that name.. best way to tell is have your mom stop by Susanne's one day with one and let her look it over.. and then you know which spelling to use. it is quite possible that they are true Ameraucauna's they do come in their color.. doseent your mom live close to Susanne? thought so... if they are true Ameraucauna's when she starts breeding them I would like a wheaton.. is she keeping them isolated so that they only have themselves to breed with..? it would be fun we can swap back and forth since were all so close to each other and have many of the same breeds. cant wait for the Polish to start up.

I know all about Marans not getting higher protein

no fun at all.. you live and learn I guess!

Well this is new info to me. I have never fed my marans higher protein food. I have the black coppers (Wade Jeane line) and blue marans. They are beautiful, big, healthy birds and they're laying pretty well for me. Did I just luck out and get a healthy bloodline? Is this typical to the breed or just certain strains? What happens to them? The marans have been my healthiest birds this year.

And I've had my cuckoo marans for several years now and raised many chicks from them without any health issues.

There are Ameraucana's and then there are Araucana's. Ameraucana's have a medium length tail, muffs and a small pea comb. The Araucana's are rumpless and have bigger ear tufts. When Araucana's are crossed with any other breed, they can produce blue, green, pink or yellow eggs and this is where the Easter Eggers come in. At least, this is my understanding. I often refer to my favorite book. If ya'll don't have it, you should check it out. It's "Storey's Illustrated Guide to Poultry Breeds" and they have lots of color pictures that I love to look at. My book is falling apart, I have looked it to death.

For some reason my post didn't show.....weird. I'll try again. I said you should worm them. If they have worms they won't lay. That's a good place to start.

I wormed them tonight with panacure.. should I worm them again in 2 weeks or just fecal test in a couple of days? the ones i saw in the water wer're the white spaghetti looking ones like puppies get.. I expect to see them expelled. then Im going to strip the coop and re- do the pine shavings everywhere for them. i had the wazine, but I found it after, I decided on the panacure. for horses but it said didnt have to worry about milk production and use so I thought it should be safe.. well see..

glad to know that about it being a reason for not laying..
thanks
