And yet, the darker they are the longer it takes. Hence, I have had Marans eggs take 29 days when other LF breeds hatch on day 21.

And if your temp is lower than 100.5 you are more likely to have a few more days added to hatching times. I seldom test an egg for life until day 22 and have often tapped on one and it tap back so I just let it finish cooking.

My Cuckoo Marans hatch at 21 days, the black copper marans usually hatch by 23 days. I've never had any go 25 days. My blue marans are from this past Spring's hatch so these are the first eggs that I've incubated from them. I was really surprised that they were fertile, and thrilled that one hatched!

Also meant to say that this incubator holds a steady 100.5 temp, so far without fail.

We're actually just now home from the hospital. His surgery was scheduled for Monday and then we got a call just before leaving that the surgeon needed to reschedule. Turns out, the surgeon had an emergency appendectomy. Roddy's surgery was this morning and so far he's doing good. I have a feeling that the anesthesia hasn't worn off yet though. Thanks for asking. I'm glad to be home and glad it's over. Starting at 4:00 a.m. makes for a very long day. And now I get to go take care of all the chickens.

Toffee my rooster died. And my husband put down 2 hens who were dying last night. And then I had to put down one of my new seramas this morning.

Let's just say it's been rough rough rough! Do I have some sort of plague?? I'm pretty sure it's cocci. I don't know if the sudden rains have just spiked it or what. I'm going to be stripping down the coop and bleaching and bleaching.

So far what I have left doing well out of my large birds is a rooster mutt, 2 fat phoenixes, and my fat wyandottes from phoneman. (those birds have not once caused me issues! Tough birds!) and I have 2 Easter Eggers and one barred rock.

Wow, so glad your day is coming to a close. I am sure it has been long and I am so happy that Roddy and everyone is doing okay. I am sure you will still have your hands full with taking care of him and the kids but hopefully it will be short and everything can get back to normal.
