Block wind. Use plastic or plywood. Whatever works.
Put a permanent light out there. Not for heat, but so YOU can see when all heck is breaking loose (here's hoping you never have predator issues). My parents only ever turned on a large lightbulb in the coop when we had a sudden temperature drop. Chickens can keep most of their bodies warm. Combs tend to get frostbite and a single lightbulb can prevent that. Just raising the coop temperature two or three degrees above outside is usually the birds need.

Look for the thread(s) with the thermal images of roosting chickens on a freezing night. Quite awesome! They fluff their feathers and cover their feet. Only warm/red areas were their faces.

I will admit to using red christmas lights for the silkies...not for heat but so I can see where everyone is when I go out there. DH hates it.

ETA: I like the red - not as bright as clear ones, and I can see where I step so it is not on a fuzzy!

Lamps only are used on young/small chicks.

Thank you for the help! I am quoting this particular response due to the fact that someone is almost kinda telling their age. If my memory serves me right, North Charleston was finally incorporated as a city in June of 1973...me think! I don't know when you have last been to North Charleston, but it has grown by leaps and bounds. A few years ago, North Charleston was trying to jump the upper Ashley River and incorporate land off of Hwy 61 above Middleton Plantation.

Again, thanks for the tips!

Wanna bet that is a roo?

You see that pose often when Nicole picks up a roo! I have not seen another person do an adult roo that way except her. I am sure dixie beast is hoping for plenty of girls though. It does look like a man flopped out there all happy like that.

I have found if I flip them over and rub the tummy they all fall asleep!! CRAP...I HAVE ALL ROOS!!!LOL...naw,I think its just a relaxed baby thing!!

I am so sorry! I totally understand.
Our power went out this morning at 4:30 am and didn't come back on until 8 am. I put heat packs in all the brooders but had no idea what to do about the bators other than cover them. My hatcher dropped down to 80 but I had heat packs in for the already hatched chicks. I never opened the Sportsman to see what it was like.
Yeah, a generator is real nice to have when DH will keep gas in it! He had only been in bed an hour when the power went off and I couldn't get him up to go get more. Geez! You should have seen me outside at 5 am trying to siphon gas out of HIS car to put in the generator in my house coat and slippers. He never keeps enough gas in there though to get out so that was a loss.
I lost a few little chicks down at the barn even with all those heat packs in with them. I realized it wasn't just the heat from them being on them that helps but the air they breathe. I had the brooders covered in blankets but it didn't help as I lost 6 chicks.
We'll see what the bator shows me now. I will candle tonight and for the next few days to see what I have growing or dying.

Thanks, Duke Energy! I hear we are getting a rate increase as well!

Off to get more gas for the generator myself and restock my heat pack supply.

I am so sorry for your loss...I really hope all is well in the bators!!!

Had a productive day off...Washed the dog then outside the rest of the day...gathered all the feeders and waterers and brought inside for a good scrub. Cleaned 4 coops and replaced pine shavings in the laying boxes/buckets (added some so now there are 13 with 3 girls laying...too optomistic? LOL) Moved a pair here and there and that required changing roosts heights. Caught and moved 12 in all (13 cause one chick escaped and I had to catch her/him again) I think all is good for a month or so...ok maybe a couple weeks

She still visits down there so she knows what it looks like. Her roots are here in SC! I am not sure she is quite that old though! Gold Griffin Chicken Mom, you were just a wee baby then, eh?

I love Charleston!
