I am so sorry! I totally understand.
Our power went out this morning at 4:30 am and didn't come back on until 8 am. I put heat packs in all the brooders but had no idea what to do about the bators other than cover them. My hatcher dropped down to 80 but I had heat packs in for the already hatched chicks. I never opened the Sportsman to see what it was like.
Yeah, a generator is real nice to have when DH will keep gas in it! He had only been in bed an hour when the power went off and I couldn't get him up to go get more. Geez! You should have seen me outside at 5 am trying to siphon gas out of HIS car to put in the generator in my house coat and slippers. He never keeps enough gas in there though to get out so that was a loss.
I lost a few little chicks down at the barn even with all those heat packs in with them. I realized it wasn't just the heat from them being on them that helps but the air they breathe. I had the brooders covered in blankets but it didn't help as I lost 6 chicks.
We'll see what the bator shows me now. I will candle tonight and for the next few days to see what I have growing or dying.
Thanks, Duke Energy! I hear we are getting a rate increase as well!
Off to get more gas for the generator myself and restock my heat pack supply.
Oh no, so sorry to hear that Amy. I'm already fretting over power losses that I know are coming my way. I'm actually thinking of buying a 2nd generator so we can have enough power to keep the chicken lights on. Like you, we have a well that pulls a lot of power but we need water. We also need heat and then there is the incubators. Anyway, my husband does the same thing and makes me so mad. I'll fill up the gas cans for emergencies and then DH will use them to fill up his car! It doesn't occur to him that if our power is out the local gas stations might not have power either. Men! So what caused your power to go off?
So glad I don't have that problem - gas stealing hubby or power outages! We lived here for about 12 years before we ever had a power outage. No matter the ice or snow, we never lost power. I am betting that we will this winter because Duke has been upgrading so much on the substation we are on. Every time I have lost power this year it is because they are working on something.
DH can't steal gas out of my gas can cause I don't put gas in one - that is his job. I make sure he rarely has to put gas in the truck, so gas cans are his responsibility so he can cut grass. We do not have a generator - pop does though!
