I am going to remove the last cockerel into the house today to be the official house chicken. I can't believe my husband went for it, but such is the persuasive power of the D'uccle!

Just joined the BYC Forum. I'm on Johns Island. I've got mostly Guineas but recently adopted a Miile Fleur bantam rooster and got 5 red hens to keep him company. I think they're RIR and New Hampshire crosses. I got the hens from TSC as chicks in the spring and they've been giving me beautiful eggs for most all summer. I might be looking to get a few more hens of some different types later on, possibly some Americaunas.
I would be nice to find someone close who has chicks so I don't need to mail order them.

Welcome, it's always great to have new members. I love your area, Charleston and Edisto are my favorite places in the world. I live in the upstate (Spartanburg County).

And welcome to our fantastic SC thread!
You live in a beautiful area. Definitely one of my favorites. I drove down to John's Island about 5 years ago to pick up some birds. It was a great place to drive through.
Guineas are funny creatures and I know you must enjoy yours. I have about 45 youngsters running around the grow up pen. No matter how I try to get them to go out and free range they stay right at the barn but at least the older ones are out and about most of the day.
How many Guineas do you have? Do your neighbors mind them at all? Do you keep them penned or let them free range?
Your Mille Fleur rooster sounds pretty. I hope you can share some photos of your birds with us soon.
Do you have a garden? We love to share all that info, too.

The one laying the brittle egg may take another year before she starts laying a decent egg or she may improve next spring. I had a Faverolle that never laid an egg without calcium bumps on it. I often do find eggs in the laying coop that feel like sandpaper but it isn't always from the same hen because color and shape seem to be different.
I credit it to what they happen to be eating, how they are digesting and absorbing their nutrients and how stressed they are. Your lady may get a lot better as time goes on.
It should not bother what is inside the egg. I have always kept those eggs back for myself unless the neighbor's kids want them. They like all those odd eggs.

How far are you from NC state line at I-77?

I am 1 1/2 hours from Charlotte. I am outside a small town called Inman.
Are you near Lake Wylie?

I'm in Dobson about 10 miles from VA its about an hour from Charlotte I get down that way ever now and then will you be at any shows closer to the state line or in NC?
