Lauren,

Try carrying him around under your arm for a few minutes. I was able to get one under control by carrying him while I did chicken chores.
I did that several times and it worked. If it doesn't work, put him in a pot of chicken and dumplings.

I had one that stuck his spur into my leg the first day I wore shorts this past spring. Hurt like the dickens. I kept honey on it for several days and it did not get infected. (honey has an antibiotic effect) He ended up in a friends stew pot.

I have heard the rice thing about absorbing moisture...that was a valid suggestion...I am a fairly newbie myself but I did have a couple golden comets in with my ameraucauna hens and rooster and only the comets were laying...the first couple dozen eggs were light to medium brown then they started looking like they had dirty spots on them that looked greenish dirty moldy...I finally decided to try washing a couple and they ended up actually having dark brown spots where the dirty spots on them that looked greenish dirty moldy were?!? curious... I think the bloom were making the coloring weird...don't know if this helps or not...I have recently separated my comets from the ameraucaunas to see if the spots persist.

Welcome to BYC!

OK I have a mean rooster also...BUT he's a good rooster. He protects his girls and anything in the backyard.even the 18yr old cat...WELL except me and if my dad stops by. He hates us!! But I let my girls/and him free range in my fenced in yard(from 1 til dark)(dad gets off at 1 and stops by to let them out) and YES the rooster still trys to get him too... HAHAHHA!!! I Have gotten into a flipflop fight too...And I have kicked him in the chest about 10ft. and I've chased him to the neighbors laughter!!!! He's still an A$$, but I've grown to love his Blue Butt and it's all good..Oh his pic is my avatar!!!

So what I'm trying to say is If he does his job then oh let him be!!! I have...He's got me twice in the back of the leg, didn't hurt but he's about 15lbs and almost made me fall...But Like i said he does his job so FOR now he will stay, and he's Purdy!!! lol !!!

I think he was protecting his girl when he bit me...as I was trying to pick her up. He's gonna have to learn his lesson soon though! He's such a handsome boy..I'd hate to have to put him in the freezer!

Here's the culprit:

He's a Beauty, he may just want you to leave HIS girls alone... Mine will only allow me to pick up only a few of his girls that are low on the peckin order...so they are the ones I love the most!!!!!! But there is an understanding in the backyard...It's mine...lol!!! What's funny is My mean rooster will take food from my hand and then run it to his girls(if they are not all ready there)... Maybe try to understand him and his job....I had too...!!

Ordered 6 hatchery hens that should arrive next week! Made some more progress on the chicken coop this weekend.

I haven't had a mean BLRW roo and I have owned 4 different bloodlines of them. However, I have had plenty of other nasty fellas. Mine learn to tolerate me because I am head honcho here. I am Alpha and they see what happens to those who try to say otherwise. I think even DH is "hen pecked!"

I have tried to retrain them in the past to no avail. I have trained dogs and horses but I never could change the nature of the roo. I am afraid he will not change his views. Like Yancy says, he is taking care of his flock and will be determined to do so. He may mellow in a few years though.
