on a sad note...one of my original hens, "Crazy Cora" the leghorn when to chicken heaven this morning. She was one that I now know I was lied to about her age. She hadn't been doing well for a long while now..sleeping all the time and just acting off..so I knew she didn't have long. I jhad chosen to let her live her life out here rather than putting her down since she didn't seem to be in pain. Sad day for my chickies but I still have so much to be thankful for!

I have trained mine to come running home for the dinner bell. It's easy. Sit with them while giving their favorite treat ( mine love live mealworms ). During the individual hand feeding, I frequently ring a bell. After 2-3 sessions, they come to the coop when I ring the bell. Of course, they expect a treat. Give them one or two, so they don't forget. It saves me a lot of chasing time.

Happy Thanksgiving! We are back from Charlotte. Yesterday, I was still undecided whether I was going or not. But my children's begging won out. We woke up to a stinky, rotten egg in the incubator. That's always nice! Then I was out checking on everyone and found my little frizzle cochin/silkie cross Puff under the ramp of the coop. She's part of my laying flock and I have the 21 guineas in with them. I pulled her out and saw her back was bare and bloody. I had seen a guinea chasing her the day before. I picked her up and two of my other little frizzles and moved them to the teenager baby coop. But I couldn't find Runt, my favorite little girl, and the first chick we ever hatched. She was the first one to greet me every day and followed me everywhere. My husband, kids and MIL were in the car but I refused to leave without finding her. And I did. She was half under the coop dead. I had to dig her out and when I did, found her back bloody and bare. I think she was trying to escape the guineas and got stuck. We buried her in the orchard.

Have your guineas become aggressive with the chickens? I haven't seen them mess with the larger ones but obviously the bantams were a different story. I'm going to miss that little rascal! I think it's time to separate the guineas. Just wondering what to expect from here. My guineas are 4 months old and had been with the same chickens since they were chicks. I don't know why they would suddenly turn on them!
