That wind today was terrible! Cut you right to the bone! Put down extra straw and put up a tarp to block the wind off of the Wyandottes. The bantams and polish rooster refuse to get in the warm coop, so they are gonna have to take their chances tonight out in whatever tree they're in. Anyway, here's a pic of my SLW babies all getting a drink. The rooster is getting his tail feathers in. Soon enough i'll be hearing his attempts at crowing

One silkie hen lost to the cold already --- she was on the bottom of the 'pile'.

I did not get back before dark to get new heat bulb in....I had only been using a regular bulb - but it burned out the other day & I am slacking ....

ETA: DH said I should move them to the basement. We have a dirt floor in there....I could really put the small dog lot in there and throw shavings down....will be a lot warmer and easier for me to clean during the winter! Hmmmm....something to consider...

We had the girls out free ranging yesterday for awhile and I got some pictures I just had to share.

Maranda's colors were beautiful in the sun. Just wish all the red meant she was laying. I'm sure she will be any day now.

Harriet is full of personality. When I say this at home, my husband just shakes his head. He doesn't seem to think that chickens can have personality. One day, I'm going to make sure he finds out.

This is probably my favorite. The golden girls were the smart ones. They discovered the bugs over near the woodpile and were having a feast. I love the fuzzy butts!

Once they had been out for about an hour, they decided it naptime and walked, one following the other, to the run. It was the easiest we have ever put them up. Now, we know what time to let them out, at least on the weekends when we are home.

I'm sorry for your loss, But Please help me learn from your experience...

I thought a hen would be able to withstand the cold without a heat lamp when feathered out. are silkies different?

I don't want to seem un sympathetic, but I do want to learn. We don't currently have silkies, but you never know.

Silkies are different. They don't have the same kind of feathers. Their feathers are loose, not tight so they don't hold in heat.
