I will have to read & catch up in a bit. But I just wanted to say... I have babies hatching!
Story:
One of DH's buddies at work has hens and a couple of roos. He found a nest of eggs & did not know if the hen had been sitting or not.
He robbed that nest & took those eggs to work in an egg carton. Some were upside down lol - some were pointy end down - and as far as I know left them in either his truck or DH's truck overnight while they were working. Dh doesn't get home til around 12 or 1 in the afternoon due to farm work after his regular job....
Sent them to me to see if they would hatch. I waited around 8 hours for the eggs to warm up in the house ---they were COLD!!!
Set them in the still air hovabator incubator. Cracked one last week and it was developed well & alive! Well...til I opened the egg & it died.
These eggs were very cold with no hen for over 24 hours, they were about 2 weeks through the incubation period..... Two of the 13 have hatched so far!!!
Alright, what do people have in their incubator? I have to live vicariously through all of you since mine are empty. I am so fighting to hold off until February before I put more in it. I have so many silkie eggs right now but just do not want any chicks unless a hen is caring for them--but I can still hear what everyone else is hatching!
Also, do we have anyone on here that raise rose comb RIRs? Or have in the past? Just wondering what they are like in personality.![]()
I have a friend down the road that does not like shavings. That is why I posted. We discussed the same subject yesterday, and it was on my mind. I promise you that she keeps her stuff squared away, and she had problems twice. I keep wondering if I will have my day, but I am reluctant to change when I haven't had any problems. I like the shavings for the compost piles. I guess I am trying to recover some of that expensive feed. I do move the birds out when they don't need the extra heat. I have hatched earlier than I normally do, so I wonder what my limits are. I can't move them out as fast as I would if this was April.
Yes, I have a lot of silkie eggs not in the incubator. I just really needed a break and then the girls got with it. I put some under a silkie hen yesterday that acted like she was setting but to day she has decided she is not setting. That is a pullet for you! I also put some under a cochin hen that had been setting for a few weeks wanting some eggs and today she was not on them either--hoping she was just getting a bite to eat.Silkie eggs - my own ---and whatever it is I am hatching now - I have no clue what they are !![]()
