I will have to read & catch up in a bit. But I just wanted to say... I have babies hatching!

Story:
One of DH's buddies at work has hens and a couple of roos. He found a nest of eggs & did not know if the hen had been sitting or not.
He robbed that nest & took those eggs to work in an egg carton. Some were upside down lol - some were pointy end down - and as far as I know left them in either his truck or DH's truck overnight while they were working. Dh doesn't get home til around 12 or 1 in the afternoon due to farm work after his regular job....

Sent them to me to see if they would hatch. I waited around 8 hours for the eggs to warm up in the house ---they were COLD!!!

Set them in the still air hovabator incubator. Cracked one last week and it was developed well & alive! Well...til I opened the egg & it died.

These eggs were very cold with no hen for over 24 hours, they were about 2 weeks through the incubation period..... Two of the 13 have hatched so far!!!

ETA: The buddy lives about a 45 minute drive from us I think....Maybe an hour.

I swear! You could hatch a rock!

I am so loving these Marans pullets! Yes, another egg this morning and I think they are getting darker~ The egg on top is a Cochin eggs but I am wondering if the first Marans egg and the last are from one girl and the middle one from the other. I can see a very different color to the middle from the other two. And that is one of the darkest of my cochin eggs. I know there are darker eggs but this is a start!!

So.... There was no reason my Silver Spangled Hamburgs should not be laying. They are my white egg layers. Since something got the rooster and killed him over the summer, I just have the girls in the free range flock, with my ee roos, and another hen that won't stay up, the turkeys & the guineas.

I had found one nest a couple of weeks ago, or rather a stash of eggs, some partially eaten, some buried partially, and a lot rotten!

Last week I caught one finally going into the woods with a rooster. He stood guard & they came out together... I wandered around in that area until I found the nest!

I got the eggs, but marked and left one. I got them daily until right before the weekend...all were gone, even the one I had marked!

Thursday or Friday I was in the kitchen and heard an egg song! LOUD! I looked out the dining room window and one of the SSH was on the deck steps just singing so loud! I watched her come up on the deck then left her alone.

I checked later... and had a pile of 4 eggs on the deck right outside the door!

I have a short piece of thin plywood leaning against the house there, and the hens had laid under that wood.

Yesterday I got one of DH's wooden rabbit nest boxes-filled with hay and put under the wood. Went to check a few minutes ago, and I have one new SSH egg, a brown egg, which has to be from the hen that won't stay up & it wasn't in the box, just laying on the deck, AND also in the box, a tiny little whitish colored egg - no bigger than the ones laid by DD's OEGs. No OEGs are loose, so maybe it is a guinea egg?

I am getting eggs delivered right to my back door! How cool is that?!!?

It's still early for guinea eggs, in my experience. But the guinea eggs have a very different shape to them, they are pointed on one end. And the shell is very hard. Once you see one you will know. They are about medium in size I think.

Nicole: Didn't daddy tell you no hatching til spring?
Me: NO .
Nicole: I am pretty sure he said NO Hatching.
Me: He did not.
Nicole: DADDY! Didn't you tell momma no hatching til spring?
Me: tattle tale!
DH: Yes I did. I told you to wait til spring so you wouldn't have so much to ...blah blah....
Me: Shut up

I've been good, my incubator is still empty (but it's running just in case). I have some marans eggs that I think I will hatch because I don't want to waste them. Such a shame to eat those beautiful eggs when I could get a chick from them. But I haven't hatched anything since November....I'm having withdrawal symptoms!

Quote:

We cannot figure out what it is.... it may be by one of the SSH -one didn't lay after we got them last spring... it is not a guinea egg IMO - I told DH they are more round with a pointy end. Sorta teardrop shaped.......This egg looks like an OEG egg.

I only have 4 hens total running loose so it probably is a SSH egg. Just a tiny one! I will go get a pic!
