I bought some new pine shavings to put in the girls nest boxes and ended up cleaning the coop up for them quite a bit. Some of the shavings were wet around the water, so I made sure to get all of those out, added some DE everywhere and put a new layer of shavings down. So much for making it simple. They were making such a ruckus while I had them locked out of the coop! I should have had video going when I opened the pop door. One by one they started to go in. They would get to the top of the ramp, put their head in and turn around and walk back down. Finally one of the Buffs and the Ameraucana got brave enough to go inside. Too much change at once. Now, I'm really hoping they will still use their nest boxes, even though they have clean shavings in them. If not, I guess I'll be having an egg hunt tomorrow.
It was a perfect day to be doing stuff outside. We are meeting our daughter in Gaffney tomorrow for shopping, dinner and a movie, so any other work will just have to wait.

Amy I just got my first egg from the Cochin girls I got from you. They are so sweet. They sit in my lap and darn if it doesn't sound like a purr coming from them. Thank you, I'm really enjoying the girls.

Awwww! Don't you just love them? Bantam Cochins are so special to me. I mean, I love all my birds and the d'Uccles are certainly small and cuddly but they don't talk to me the way my bantam Cochins do.
They are good medicine for the soul, don't you think?

And wow! They took their sweet time about laying! I can't wait to see what babies you get from them and your roo.

Well golly gee...I am all teary! I LUV you too Amy...And carting babies is a pleasure!! I can't wait!!!
I want everyone on here to know that Samantha, aka Dixiebeast, is one of the coolest friends you could ever have.

OK the millefleur d'Uccles got their first day trip outside....Well they hated it!!!! I'm afraid they miss the TV, and they where scared of everything....the wind, a leaf, a crow, other chickens. So tommorrow they will be left out longer til they more use to it!!!! Coop is almost done, just need to do some finally touches and the run needs to be wired over.

They are Not sure about the sand... so they stayed on the ladder almost the whole time!

Gonna add some planters and paint a few things. Hopefully tomorrow they will explore alittle bit more!!!!
I also have to finish the inside of the coop!!!

You know I have been considering doing such a thing here...not fancy...do not do fancy!! Pink talked about a cookout back in fall and I think it would be great to host a cookout and meet! Seems like I may be kinda in the middle of all the users from upstate and below!! Hmmm...APRIL???

I wish I was rich enough to have a big party here and invite all my friends! You guys on here would all love each other. I have enjoyed meeting and hanging out with you all!
And I assure you, Kimberly, Samantha is already your friend just from this thread!

Joy...me and you are gonna have to have a serious pheasant discussion!! I just need 18 days to see if I am a new quail owner! Set my eggs today!

I have a pair of pheasants and a flock of buff orpingtons that live in my peafowl yard. Everybody gets along just fine. The peafowl are big and they have the respect of the roosters because of size. But the Buff Orpingtons are pretty docile chickens. I really don't think any rooster would pick a fight with a peacock, at least not twice. Peacocks are incredibly strong and could hold their own with any other fowl. As for free ranging, that is something you will have to decide yourself. I tried free ranging my second peacock because I worried that he would fight with the first pair in the pen. He would pace back and forth beside the fence wanting in with the other peafowl. I opened the gate and let him in and he's never wanted back out. They do seem to be social, the peacocks don't really even fight during mating season. They have a pecking order but I didn't see a lot of aggression between them and I had 3 living together this past spring.

Thanks so much for the feedback! I may just go for it! Do you get eggs to sell or hatch to sell?

hi everyone.. wow have I missed a lot... my lap top wont go online and my pc the fan went out so I have to take it in and get a new fan.. ughh.... been crazy without.. but borrowing my moms lap top now.
Looks like everyone is doing well.. and getting ready for spring.. I got out the other day when it was warm and did a half cleaning..

I have two nest boxes and Helen my cornish cross hen ( she and Tom are still alive and well) I just cant butcher them... they each weigh aaround 19 lbs now.. and they are so funny to watch run. but they are acting like real chickens now.. well Helen has taken to sleeping in the lower nest box ( milk crate high- so easy for her to get in and out of) and she faces out...well these cornish crosses dont Poop normal chicken poop.. they are more like cows and use every bit of good out of feed and then they just shoot the poop out in streams.. yuck... well anyway of course none of the girls will use the house cause its all poopie.. even after I super cleaned it.. they must have known she was going to get right back into it ... its so funny to see the girls line up like planes on a runway waiting for their turn in the one box now.. sometimes if one hen is taking too long the other hen slowly slides in too..

Im getting spring fever so badly and I know that we are still going to have some cold weather.. starting to get my garden ideas together. I learned a lot last year with my first real garden of my own.. gonna do some stagering of my crops for sure... anyone else getting spring fever too

Pink
