Greetings from the Lowcountry of SC. New to Forum. New To Backyard Chickens, trying to catch up to many of my neighbors who have been enjoying this for years! Building my tractor this weekend, will post pictures in process and when complete! Anyone else from the Lowcountry / Charleston Area?

And welcome to the SC thread!
Come on in and prop your feet up! We all love to chat and share stories about our chickens, other farm animals and families and do some gardening.
Tell us about yourself and all about your chickens. Can't wait to see photos!

There are several on here around the low country and below Columbia.
I love the Charleston/low country area! I seriously need to go to the beach again. This farming stuff is getting in the way of my beachin' time!

You, Miss Mary, understand the trials of shipped eggs. I feel lucky to get a 50% hatch, too from shipped eggs. I read on one website that even from your own chickens you should feel lucky if you get a 70% hatch each time. If that is truly the case, I must be doing something right because I get about a 95% hatch rate from my own here and if you only count some breeds it is 99%.
But I do try to up the possibility for my shipped eggs and my own here by adding extra vitamins. Something I feel commercial feeds and even local feeds are lacking in. Since I added a regime of vitamins I have recorded increased productivity and hatchability. But I also have stressed the point that Silkies need extra Vit. E. And that includes my Sizzles.

And of course, Mary! I would be happy to set eggs for you if you do not have space. It will only cost you......a jar of honey!

WAIT.......... whatchoo gonna charge me?

Guess I need to get those birds some vitamins....besides I am NOT complaining with 100% fertility..

Besides hatching deaths from my experience are going to happen whether by a hen or human. Shipped or not shipped.

Mama ( blue silkie ) is broody. AGAIN.

well that is first time this year..........was hoping my shipment would have been here today...should have been here yesterday....crap. I am going to give her some of mine in bator I think....she goes broody about 3-4 times a year!

I am going to hand turning & removing the turner so I can get more in there!

Well on second thought NO I won't be removing the turner. I just now turned it off.........there is a chick in there.........and at least 3 more pips

So...my chickens in my layer coop have lice.

I've dusted them and the coop..along with the ones in the other coops. I'm going to completely clean out the coop this weekend hopefully. I guess since I let them free range it'll be hard to keep them from getting them? Anyways my question is can't I use lvermectin liquid topically every now and then to keep lice/mites off of them? I know people have posted about this before but I can't remember specifics. How much and how often do I use it? And since I'm using it topically is there any problem eating their eggs after using it? thanks!

I just treated everyone except the guineas day before yesterday. Saw mites on a chicken.

This has the dosage info. I use duvet ivermectin from Tractor Supply 250ml for $15.
I use a syringe without a needle. The instructions on the facebook page uses a syringe with needle. I would end up sticking myself

or the chicken since I have to do this by my self.
I also dusted the coop with sevin dust. I don't worry too much about eating the eggs since ivermectin is the wormer used for humans.

FYI 20 drops = 1cc/ml 1 mark on my syringe=1/10 cc/ml which is 2 drops

Thanks Mary, great information. I've used Sevin dust regularly and it works great but I've always been afraid to use ivermectin.
