Does anyone actually keep a thermometer in their brooder for chicks?

I do. On the ones out in the shed. Especially this time of year. I put in directly under the lights and then move it to the cool part later in the day just to check. I've lost so many chicks this winter. I'm trying to figure out what is the perfect thing to do. I'm having lots more success!

I have been clearing out the storage junk in the basement and was considering moving the older chicks down there in my huge fish tank. I know up here I don't use one, but I can see them from here, and walk by several times a day, so am always able to check in on them. Am a little worried about moving them before fully feathered, but the dust! OMG I would rather see it in the basement than my bedroom! LOL

Do you use just a normal outdoors thermometer? It probably runs 60-68 degrees most times - We have a bigger than normal heat unit because eventually we were going to finish the basement and add some duct work. Right now, it is not that cold to me...and I did pull a duct down to put some warm air in.....It maybe in the 50s on cold nights. I plan on using a heat lamp instead of a normal bulb like I use now.

I am totally clueless on thermometers.

Robert, how many chicks finally hatched out? Did I miss the post with the final number?
We need to go with duck eggs this next time! Something with a bit more challenge!


ETA: No, that is not one of my new ladies (in my avatar). That is one of my own breeding. A pretty pullet that I really love. I did get all my new ones out in the grass today though and they are really happy!

Please zip tie that cochin. LOL We can take her to shows for you in the fall! I doubt I will do any others this spring......I want to use my show traveling money to take the NPIP class and get certified.

We will just do the minor stuff......bathing, transporting, entering.


My reason for saying this now....I have seen the reactions of some people over showing and who owns what and who bred what and such crap.

You have seen my brooders. You know I don't. I have the 2 brooders in the house and the....er, how many down in the barn....5 in the brooder room and 2 in the brooder coop.
Nah, I just keep an eye on the chicks and let them tell me if they are too hot or too cold and make sure they can move away from the heat or get close enough to stay warm.

no i have 2 heat lamps in this weather. just in case 1 goes out. my brooder is 8ft.x 4ft. i feel safe with that. if they get under it i will lower the lamp if they get to far away i will raise the lamp. this seems to work for me

I USED a thermo when I first put my brooders together to see what I had at light and away...after that I don't fool with it...the chicks complain when not comfy!! Amy I love your profile gal...my blue mottled from Nella will look like her!! Or atleast I hope...she isn't as wide but she has some growing to do !! I have pics to post when I slow down today! On a break right now ...we went and dug up TONS of Day lily's out of a lady's yard that was giving them away!! I still have to get them out of my trunk...poor car is squatted bad!!

It's a regular thermometer that tells the temp & humidity. My shed is insulated but not heated and I have two windows open. I have the chicks in one of those long silver feeding things that TSC uses for their chicks. I have two heat lamps that I can raise or lower as needed. And I move them out there from the incubator. I was losing chicks because they were too hot. Once I opened the windows and did a few other adjustments, we're having much better luck. I think they need more fresh air that I realized and the cold room doesn't seem to bother them at all.

I know what you're talking about and I think that's the dumbest thing. If you buy a chicken and raise it and show it, it's yours.
