love it!!! wow is that a really large shipping crate you used? If it is it is a big one! I love the see thru door! Is that screen/wire or glass/plexiglass? Love the birds and ducks! Cute that the ducks swim in a turtle...LOL!!!

I have a coop question for you guys since you live in the same general area as myself.

My husband and I have almost completed the run. It is more like a stall in that it has 3 solid 8 ft walls (one concrete and two wooden privacy fences) and a fenced front. It will also be completely covered with clear or opaque roofing panels. I know that predators are the number one concern and we are doing everything we can to keep them safe and sound by burying wire fence 3-6" under the fence line and using hardware cloth along the bottom and top to keep the coons and other critters out.

We are trying to decide what kind of coop we need. My father in law has suggested building a 3 sided coop with the front entrance open. Do you think that a 3 sided coop would be adaquate protection for them in the winter? I can put plastic sheeting on the front of the coop to retain some heat also if needed in the winter if it gets really cold.

My first coop I call the Caddilac Coop was built against a building so one wall is the building...the other walls and door is wire and then vinyl siding on the back and half the other side. It is 6x12 (the 12 side being the building on one side) and has a bottom board 12" from decking board. the top is metal roofing. Across the back is a shelf with nesting boxes and there is a roost 2x4 12' down the side against the building. Everyone seems happy there. The rest of the coops are a hodge-podge of different construction...my chicken math outnumbered my coops really fast!!! LOL Still...everyone seems happy!

Well I sit here enjoying Idiot stew over creamed taters and wondering just what to do with the new hen I recieved today...by her choice!! Went out today to find a game hen hanging in the backyard!! I need help with her color? and I just have to post a pic of the new improved Idiot!! John did a good job on his first roo butcher...and he is yummy!!

Hen looks suspiciously twin to one of my free roaming game mixes. Tail shape and body shape and the color with the gold in the neck looks like one of these...hmmm

Actually it is 2 really large shipping crates stacked. then I cut the sides off and built in a door with hardware cloth screening and plastic sheeting for the roofing. I used smaller shipping crates for the nesting boxes and the lids for the fence line. here are a few more pics so you can see the details. I try to do everything from repurposed materials. The only items I had to buy to make these was the hinges, nails/screws, dowels and dowel holders, hardware cloth and roofing. All of the wood was reused from shipping materials. and the knobs and handles were reused from pieces of furniture and cabinets and stuff that I have collected. :)

Above, Interior of coop, my roost poles are a bit crooked. lol And the exterior of my nesting boxes.

A view from the pop door to the run that the birds enjoy when I am not at home. And a view of the pop door.

I wish y'all could see the colors and markings of my muscovys better, I am going to have to catch them on a cloudy day, for whatever reason my phone just didn't capture the coloring very well. And don't tell my little Buff Orp hen but the ducks are my favorites.

Hey Everyone, Its been a little bit since I have been on.

Amy, I am so sorry about all of the damages and losses. I've never seen hail that big!

Moonchild, Those chicks of yours are so adorable! I love their colors.

Cookout first weekend in may? I hope I can make it. :) If so I would like to arrange mealworm and runnerduckling pick up at the same time?

As for me. I am still having issues with the neighbors dog. The neighbor continues to do nothing about it. And the dog continues to tear through my chicken wire barrier and dig under my fence. I do have a new coop situation that is helping. But I had 3 chicks that found a way out last week and were killed. Luckily my favorite little Buff Orp chick was smart and stayed in with my Silkies and Muscovys. . :) My little Buff Orp chick is so cute. She runs up to me and chirps and when I squat down she looks at me and then hops right onto my knee for me to pet her. She is so adorable. :) Otherwise, I have an injured Muscovy, I think my Catahoula Rebel decided to herd her a little and she got running and went under a low azalea branch and got herself stuck, well, Rebel then tried to get her out from being stuck and then when she couldn't she came and got me. I got to the duckling and her whole backside is barren of feathers and some skin is missing. Needless to say Rebel is on a very short leash from now on around the birds and the duckling is in the house getting TLC until the wounds heal. She is acting fine, eating and drinking well and everything so I have high hopes on her recovery. But it is still unfortunate that it happened and that i will I have to keep Rebel away from them she is normally so good with them.

Luckily for me, I plan on moving to a more rural area in the next 6-9 months or so. Life changes happening!! As a result, I will have 5 acres at my disposal and room for bigger coops and more birds and maybe even a milk goat or two. and no more worries about the neighbors dog!! baby steps though....

I'll post pictures soon, the coloring of my muscovy's as their feathers are growing in is so beautiful, I just have to show them off to y'all.

Did you ever try an electric fence? It won't kill the dog but gives it enough of a twang not to want to touch it again. I've been using one for about 12 years. The control box last me 3-4 years and costs less then $30.00. The wire is less then $30. I use fi-shock. I have heard many animals touch the wire and yelp.
