or you can tuck the little rascal under your arm for a few min with a baked potato stuck on each spur for about 5 min and it will lift off with your fingers

I do like phoneman does, I take my pliers and put them near the leg and grasp firmly but not too hard as there is the soft quick under there. I hold the leg next to the spur very well and slowly work the pliers back and forth like trying to unscrew the spur. Soon you feel it loosen and you can ease it off the quick. This is pretty neat because it does leave a bit of a raw stump and they won;t get on the girls for a while because it is uncomfortable. However, it is nice and soft and won;t continue to tear up their feathers and skin for more than a week and when ti does harden again it is a lot shorter.
I have tried trimming them down but they are still hard and still tear up the girls. This way the girls have a chance to "heal" or get some respite.

If you want to see how to do it remind me when you come over next time and I will show you on one of my guys. I am sure someone has grown some back out by now. I usually do everybody right before breeding season starts.

You sure are lucky! What an awesome present to get! Nikki's Silkies rock!

Nikki, I have dropped hints but we don't give presents around here so if I want one I have to buy it myself. And somehow, I always seem broke.
I have 4 new Silkies, 2 blues I hatched and raised from Kimberly's roo and 2 Partridge I bought up in Morganton. So far all 4 are looking like girls and I put them in with Gabriel today (ran out of space in the grow up brooders) and he certainly treated them like girls. They won't stay with him long. Once they start laying and their eggs are big enough to hatch I will move them to the Sizzle breeding pens.

However, Miss Nikki, I keep looking for Porcelains. I think they will cross in with my Sizzle roo, Tawney, so well. The two I have growing up look like roos so far. Bummer!

The substation for our area caught on fire. Our power was off for 5 hrs. I borrowed the neighbors small generator for my incubator and brooder. Wonderful neighbor.

Lauren I hope the power failure did not cause you any problems.

I have been having a terrible time with fertility in my white silkies. I have been so frustrated.
I have been plucking feathers, trimming feet feathers on the roo (so he does not slide off

), I finally started AI (an interesting experience

). I have had 3 or 4 develop but none have hatched. All the orpington eggs in lockdown hatched Tues and Wed. This morning one of the white silkies hatched. Boy was I shocked. 3 days late.
I would have tossed them this afternoon.

I swear that blue one still looks like a girl. I think I am really wishing here.
I love Mrs. Lyles!!! OMG! That is too funny! I am glad you told me about yours as I find it funny about mine. And your girl looks a lot like my Iowa Blue pullet. I think it is those big eyes.

Beautiful flock! Now......about the eggs hatching......what to do with those that you fall madly in love with! You are just going to have to pick up your piece of paradise and move it to the country! I swear!

Jasper says "hey!"

Mary Bell, are you adding extra Vit. E?

And what did I tell you about beautiful birds? The better they are the less likely you will get chicks from them. It is so frustrating!

I have had some hatch late lately but also some to hatch about 4 days early so I am confused but just welcome the hatching.

MARY! Oh my gosh I wanted to CRY over the power outage. I'm really really hoping it didn't hurt my eggs. When the power FINALLY turned back on the temp had gotten down to 81. I guess only time will tell. I thought it was pretty good that the bator held the temp as long as it did. When I candled the other day most of my exchequer leghorn eggs had blood rings. (a lot of them also had detached air cells when they got to me....even with only spending 1 day in route to my house) I still had a handful of those eggs developing though. All but one of my eggs I got from Amy looked good too. I'm going to be SO upset if the power outage ruined this hatch. I NEED my luck to turn around..it's like this spring/summer with my birds has been doomed or something.
