South Carolina

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! Love the baby pictures! My favorite elementary school memory was hatching baby quails for science class.
I am in Greenville, too. Close to Cherrydale and Furman. I do most of my shopping in Taylor's and Greer. Most areas of Greenville are okay with chickens. Even the city allows them, with some limits. There are lots of chicken owners ere. I know a few in your area. Have fun with your babies! I have some 3week olds right now. They are so fun!

I'm right off of Rutherford Road now. Our old house, where I lost my original hens, was surrounded by the Pebble Creek community but not in it. I did the Urban Farm tour a few weekends ago and saw a lot of people with chickens in the city limits. I find it completely bizarre that the city codes specifically allow chickens, but they are inherently not allowed outside of rural zones in the county. I imagine the only time the issue would arise is from neighbor complaints, and we have no neighbors.

Anyone have any run-ins with coyote? I hear they are bad this year. We saw two running on the railroad tracks along Rutherford Rd at dusk earlier in spring.

OK I took pics of the chicks today...And I got me a Blue Barred Rock ...90% sure it's a Roo... I had one of these last year a Large Blue Barred Rock and it was AWESOME..but I had to send it to freezer camp I don't want to do this one so I'm up for any takers. Wished it was a pullet but I know it's not...still wishing

Here's all three. I would love for the brown one to be a pullet(cause this is the 5th brown chick I've raised and all have been boys) Praying Girl. The Black is a BlkJG lookin like a pullet(I hope)
See the Blue has a much Larger Comb and it's eyes look like Roo.

Better view of the brown one and Look how Awesome the Blue BR is!!!

And if you notice there are only three chicks, Lucy's baby that hatched was killed by a brick that the momma hen scratched up and flipped it over on it. So Sad!!!
Looks like lines are beside or around the eyes. Do you remember my rule as to how the lines under or out from the middle eye play into their gender?
Truly beautiful chicks!

So sorry about Lucy's baby!

The DE that you mix in with their food--where do you get it? I just bought some last night at TSC but I am not sure if it is food grade! How much apple cider vinegar do you mix in with the water? Are the vitamins a powder that you mix in with the water? The basil leaves--is that something you throw in the coop/run or something they ingest to keep the flies away?
OH Momd29---I'm so excited for you on your wonderful hatch!!!!!!
Just wanted to tell you alittle more info that I do after a hatch
I put pedilyte half and half with water in the waterer. Just to help the weaker ones recoop from the hard hatch. i usually do this for a week or so. Some people do, some don't and when I put them where they can be outdoors or get exposed to anything from the outdoors I mix a little DE in their chick feed. Just to keep parasites and cocci at bay. So far since I've been doing this I haven't had a problem with worms or other nasty parasites. I also put DE (food grade) in the mix of my adult chickens feed plus Crushed Red Pepper all natural dewormer. Also with the adult/chicks I use Apple Cider Vinegar in the water and also A-D-E vitamins just to help out!

And Today I read somewhere that Basil Leaves Help keep flies away from the coop...I'm GONNA Try This SOON!!!!! Oh and I grow mint and ecluptyus and I put those leaves in the nest boxes to help keep mites away. All of this is organic.

I know this sounds like a lot , but really it's not and it's good clean health for our Awesome Babies!!!!!

OK I figured out my DE is food grade but I thought it was something I put on the ground. Do I do both, put it in food and on the ground? Anyone else use sweet pdz?

I have a three gallon waterer..I gues I put in about 1/3 cup not sure just pour some. Of course the smaller the waterer I use a smaller amount. and Yes I put DE in the Coop and when I pour my 50lb bag into it's container I add about 2cups of DE to it and mix in well(sort of). The Vitamins I got a First State Vet supplies it's A-D-E.
The Basil Leaves I read that FLIES hate the smell and avoid it. That's why it's good to have it in pots around your doors to your house. I was gonna try to throw a few leaves into the coop and see...Now if I throw anything Green into the coop those crazy chickens will eat it(so we'll see) I don't know if this works, but I thought it might be nice to try, plus make the coop smell a little more italian...LOL. I grow basil in a lot of my containers(since it grows like a weed even if you sow it from seeds)...plus I have Mint growing EVERYWHERE it is a weed...so I pull it up and throw it into the nestboxes for mites/lice. I have an eucalyptus tree in my yard so I also just pull a few hand fulls of leaves off of it and add it to the nestboxes for mites and lice.

And Also if you(anybody) tries anything new for pest PLEASE POST. I learn so much from this site and this thread.!!! Thanks!!! Yancy

Amy! What's your rule about the "eyeliner"? I'm curious!!! I am SO scared that one of my babies will turn out to be a roo. I adore them so much already.

If you have poultry that have stripes that come our from their eyes and go back towards their neck you will see that the boys comes out of the middle of the eye and girls have lines that come from under the eye. This is most noticeable on EEs but many other breeds are affected, too. I haven't ever looked at Welsummers because the V on their head makes them auto sexed. But there are certainly many breeds this can be used on as well as mixed breeds. It only works when they are young chicks since they grow out of the stripes in about 2 weeks or so.

If I could get anything to grow so I could try it I would share it! LOL However, my spearmint is growing wonderfully! My orange mint I put in a pot and it is pouting. Leah did plant the Basil we brought home from Jackie's shower but I haven't been out to see how it is doing. It isn't on my daily chores route so I haven't checked.
Leah's lavender is growing nicely and blooming so I may use that in something. I just love the smell of growing plants anyhow. Wish I had a green thumb instead of poop brown. LOL
