it's 3 to 5 days to watch for the pasty back sides. they rarely come that way. Got your electrolytes? if not green gatoraid and water. ( 1 quart of gatoraid makes 1 gal of drinking water )

I actually asked about this in the Raising Chicks forum earlier today because a couple had crusties this morning. They kicked back a corner of the paper towels last night and I think they ate some wood shavings. I just added some QuikChik to their water tonight - hoping it clears up...way harder to inspect those little fuzzy butts than I imagined!

So, at what point do chicks stop being absolutely horrified when they see a person? I have one or two curious/brave ones...but the majority totally smash themselves into the corners when I appear. They spread back out after a few mins, but I feel terrible freaking them out.

I have been told five to six weeks after the babies hatch out or, if she is raising them, about a week after she has weaned them away from her. We are at the 6 week mark, but ours still has babies around her. I have been wondering if she will lay as long as she is still mothering the chicks.

Welcome to all the newbies. I have been MIA, sorry.

Amy, have those guineas hatched yet? thinking it must be getting close. We now have a guinea hen sitting on a boat load of eggs, a chicken back brooding a few.

Anyone want some beautiful coral blue guineas???

Its almost time for the Greenville Dog show, so things are really getting crazy. FYI, AKC has a new thing they have started called: My dog can do that. It will be offered at the Greenville shows. it is basically an invite to bring your dog, go into a ring with some obstacles and have your dog do them, you will get a goodie bag, and allowed to walk around and see the show. There is no fee, but the TD center does charge for parking. IF you are interested in registrating your dog, they will be there to accept registrations, this includes those who have mix breeds.

So if you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Please pass this along to anyone who may be interested, we will be having news coverage and all. So watch out for it, and please stop by if this is of any interst.

Can I get a YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! So you guys know how I'm working for my Dad - and how he sold the company back in January. I have basically been told that they already have one of me in this market - so they will not have a place for me once the transition has completed. Freaks me out - I carry the insurance for our family. Jason works for a very small company - makes VERY low wages, and has no benefits as they don't offer any.
Well - I had decided that I needed to go back to school to finish out my RN. I interviewed and was offered another job with another company in town doing what I do now - but at a third of what I was making. I have until Friday to give them my answer. I have already registered for classes - and the only point that this entire plan hinged on was if Jason could find another job with benefits.
Well - the school system that he worked for as a temp last year - JUST HIRED HIM!!! He'll be making twice what he currently makes - AND - we'll have state benefits, state retirement, 401K! This means that I get to go to school full time AND be a SAHM! My class schedule is such that I only have school 2 days a week, and will be out in time to pick up the kids every day. Mom has agreed to keep Amelia in the mornings on Tues/Thurs so I can go to classes.
I can't TELL you how incredibily happy and thrilled this has made me. And how relieved.... So relieved. I get to finish my RN and then I can kick tushie doing what I know God meant for me to do. HAPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!

Great news...Congrats!!!

I keep forgetting to post, but this was Day 1. The second feed trough worked pretty good as a waterer since I couldn't find a 1 gallon the week before they came. I kept it shallow for the first day so they wouldn't get soaked if they hopped in it - which they did a lot. But I now have the lid on it and they seem to use it just fine. I'll upgrade them to the 3 gallon once I expand their area in a week or so. I think my chicks are hot-natured because they don't like hanging out under the lamp and the temp against the left wall is usually only around 90 degrees. One or two will wander over there and nap, but no one hangs out there.

The eggs are due to hatch in about a week or less. I did candle yesterday (tried to see how much room I have in case Nikki needs to set Silkie eggs) but with all that I candled I forget how many of yours are still with us. I know I had some clears but we knew some were older so they may not develop. But I do have some developing and I am excited for them to hatch.

Hey, neat idea for the dog show! They used to discourage people from bringing their dogs so this is a great idea. I know you are about to pull your hair out but am sure you are doing a great job. You are smart and level headed and have so much to offer them. I would not want to take on the responsibilities you have and it is more than twice a year, too.

I should bring Jolie and show everyone how she is a terrible LGD. Today a hawk got one of my very nice white Cochin hens! Of course, Jolie was sound asleep in the woods because she had once again been out all night carousing the neighborhood. She goes over the 4' fence with a strand of barb wire on top like it is nothing now. I am going to have to run electric fence all along the top the entire fenced property to keep her in. Then I am sure she will find another hole to dig out or punch a hole in the fence again. This is getting ridiculous. She was trapped inside the neighbors fence across the road this morning and before I could get over there to get her she had found her way back out and ran around the neighborhood and jumped the fence back into our place. Remind me again why I have a Great Pyr..........
